Here in New Jersey, the state DOT has crews that travel the major highways removing deer carcasses. These crews are given locations/mile markers for these road kills based on reports that come in from DOT supervisors and the State Police.

Well, back in the 1990s one of these crews went out to pick up the dead deer, but when they got to the first listed location there was no carcass to be found. They went to the next location, and same thing, no deer. This happened several more times, until they came up on about the fifth or sixth location. There they saw a box truck parked on the shoulder, and two guys loading a deer carcass into the truck.

Turns out the truck belonged to a Chinese restaurant in the area, and in it were the missing carcasses from the list, plus a few more, all in a greater or lesser state of decomposition. Needless to say, an investigation was begun, and the restaurant was found to have been serving roadkill to its customers, calling it beef.

Another Chinese restaurant a couple of towns over got shut down in the 1980’s when the health inspector found them serving cat.

No Chinese restaurants for me, thanks.
