Re: Popocatepetl volcano, Mexico
How close is that city?

Popocatépetl volcano—the name is Aztec for “smoking mountain”—is one of Mexico's most active volcanoes. The glacier-clad stratovolcano has been erupting since January 2005, with daily low-intensity emissions of gas, steam, and ash.Jan 6, 2021

Those people are nuts. Erupting since 2005?

Do you just get use to it?

Re: Popocatepetl volcano, Mexico
Actually it started erupting regularly in 1995. On days when the pollution in Mexico City isn't too bad, you can see this volcano and the counterpart Iztccihuatl (the white woman) from the city, a beautiful sight as the sun rises behind them.

But these are just two volcanoes, there are lots of active volcanoes surrounding Mexico City, the most dangerous one is to the southwest, Xitle or Chiconautzin which last erupted around 300 ad and covered big areas with lava in what is now the southwest part of Mexico City, including the UNAM university grounds and some really interesting ruins called Cuicuilco.

The legends have it that Popo is benevolent, no prophecies about doom coming from there, all of the volcano doom is about Chiconautzin. Lots of micro quakes in that area over the last few years, and also cases of the earth burning - attributed to methane trapped underground.

Fortunately, a big eruption of Popo is more likely to destroy towns on the eastern and southeastern side of the mountain than to bring destruction to Mexico City.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
