Yes it is. And it's going to get worse. Right now, there is a guy, an electrician, works and makes good money but he is living in an RV that he parks on the street in the neighborhood, discreetly because he can't find a place to live. He bought it last year after couch surfing with friends for over a year. Every available apartment has hundreds of applicants, and they bid up the price out of reach of most people. He can't even find a spot to rent in an RV park, and people are booking campsites and living there, pricing out people that actually want to go camping.

But my next door neighbors are immigrants from Africa, they are on the dole and get their rent paid for by people like the guy who works and pays taxes while living in an RV.

Meanwhile, the people from Vancouver that are making a million plus selling a crap apartment are all flooding Vancouver Island and inflating the prices here to ridiculous levels.

It's making it nearly impossible to find anything for a normal human, so frustrating.

Canada's crisis will soon be a massive supply of homes for sale.

Nope. The Chinese use real estate as a way to get their money out of China and launder illegal money. They will keep the cycle going, with the approval of Chinese and Canadian authorities. Most of these properties are unoccupied or used like hotels through Air BnB. Canadians are already priced out of the market and that isn't going to change anytime soon since all political parties here are beholding to China and Chinese interests.

We have been under stealth invasion since 1986, every year the number of "Chinese investors" buying up property and flipping it for profit has increased every year ever since, and now we are beyond the point of no return. Some of us have been trying to sound the warning here for years, and were getting called the R word but now everyone sees it, now that it's too late. Keep in mind that as far as the Chinese government is concerned, all Chinese nationals are expected to hold no other loyalty than to the Party, no matter where they happen to live in the world, and they keep an eye on Chinese ex pats, even descendants of Chinese immigrants. Underestimate the Chinese at your own peril.

It would be nice to restrict property ownership to citizens only. Single Individual Citizen. One per Property Deed.

In addition, institute a capital gains tax of 40-50% of net proceeds of sale, and flood the market with government-built affordable (i.e., cheap) housing, too, to cool things off in a hurry.

But the government won’t lift a finger to help, because it’s afraid of losing votes of people who are riding the wave of high house prices to acquire wealth, and they don’t want to piss off the banks, who make big profits on writing mortgages for overinflated house deals, and who would lose big time if the bubble was popped and house prices were brought back down to earth.

The government doesn’t give a flying fuck about ordinary people, it is only interested in what the 1% want. The government wants people to be homeless, poor and starving anyway, so that every penny they have goes to the 1%.

You know a country has a serious problem when the sole economic activity is real estate speculation.

I actually thought the article I posted was from 2010 not 2019, so foreshadowing was probably the wrong word.

I got it mixed up with an article from 2010 where CSIS warned us all that two provinces in particular were more or less under the influence of foreign spies.

Yes, this is all true. Gordon Campbell was a traitor and a drunk. First he was mayor of Vancouver for Expo 86 and then was Premier. He bent us over and let Chinese money take us in the rear. When he got tossed for corruption Christy Clark, one of the most despicable people ever in Canadian politics took up his traitorous torch and amped it up even more. But it is also the fault of apathetic Canadians for allowing it to happen. People are starting to wake up but I fear it's too late to turn back the clock.

Keep in mind it wasnt until 1997 the Laws on Foreign Investment were relaxed and it started right then in Vancouver. I cant recall if it was a provincial or federal relaxation but thats when it all started going up.

It's bad down here too, here in SW Idaho the real estate prices are absurd. Young people just starting out are hosed, our son bought a nice new fifth wheel trailer that he and his GF have on our property. He is lucky actually living space rent free.

Here's some rando suburbVan info. Circa 2001/2002, there was two front page articles in both the Surrey Leader and Surrey Now. The headlines read similar to "Indo-Canadians now the majority in Surrey". That refers to Canadians from India for those who dont know. Considering the whole lower mainland is a multicultural melting pot, that doesnt really highlight, then and now, the other races in Surrey or the lower mainland. I say it that way since most people are saying 'hey thanks China'. So that doesnt include Philipino's, Vietnamese, Koreans, Saudi/Emirates or anyone from South America. And the rest of the world, just to be inclusive yo.

It's also eye opening when you see what makes up the majority of Vancouver's homeless population and compare let alone just wonder how other people from countries whose money is worth in some cases a lot less than ours and they are making it work here. Mind you, a provincial audit years ago by 3 local Uni professor's found about 1/3 of BC's income was unaccounted for. Random post is random.

Considering the City of Vancouver has a 15% foreign home buyer's tax within its boundaries, it cant all be crypto hodlers.

We are now home to the largest per capita of super cars in the world. That's probably due to Vancouver's relatively small population ratio but w/e.

There isnt a lot of developable land availabe in Vancouver's lower mainland unless you start rezoning ALR (Agri land reserves) and cutting up mountain sides. BC is a mountainous and watery (and effing awesome) but at least in this province, its sort of limited.

Wrong. I can tell you, history has shown us over and over again, what comes up always comes down. People never learn from history....

It will not come down until Chinese "investors" backed by the Party say so. Real estate "experts" have been saying it's going to adjust soon for more than 10 years, and the opposite has happened. This is by design. Lots of new tacky towers of tiny condos still going up all over the city, a tiny one bedroom starts at 300 - 400 K depending on the neighborhood. Canadians aren't buying. They are advertised here to comply with the law, but the units have all been presold in China before they even break ground, as they are being built a lot of flipping goes on. When the apartment is finally built, it has often gone through several owners. It's a money laundering scam, a way to move money out of China and take over entire cities. And it won't stop until China wants it to. Or until Canadians force their "elected representatives" to act on behalf of Canadians, but that isn't going to happen.
