True story:

A few years back, I had hung up a hummingbird feeder in the yard, about 15 feet away from a window that’s in front of where I sit at my computer table.

Nice summer day, early in the afternoon, had the day off. I’m sitting there, typing away, when I hear a series of taps. Looked around, didn’t see anything. Hear more taps, look up and see a tiny hummingbird hovering in front of the window, looking right at me, not four feet away. She taps the glass again, then flies over to the feeder, looks at it, looks back at me, looks at the feeder again, then back at me once more, then flies away.

Suddenly I realize that I had neglected to change the sugar water in the feeder. It has to be changed at least once a week or it goes bad, and I hadn’t done it in well over a week. The wee bird was trying to tell me to change it! Went out, emptied and cleaned the feeder, put new sugar water in, and went back inside. Didn’t see the hummingbird again while I finished up on the computer.

About 5:00 p.m.my wife returns home, and I told her what had happened. We went to the screen door adjoining the computer room to look out, and there was the little hummingbird at the feeder. She saw us, flew over to the door and hovered briefly in front of us, mere inches away on the other side of the screen. I sensed a tiny “Thank you!”, and she flew off across the yard.

I am convinced that just because a brain is small, it doesn’t follow that the consciousness need be small, too. As Nasseim Haramein said, “Looking for consciousness in the brain is like looking in the radio for the announcer.”
