I don't believe it is normal.
I think this happened before the dark age, because it happened all over the world, even in the Americas North and South, it caused movement of people. Falling of Civilizations, a change in climate to the cooler side to cold, darkness on the face of the earth, the ash cover the skies. People died, and many were very sick.
