Or maybe, you were in the position of people that are doing something very bad concerning the ship & they're terrified of being caught. With this ship being stuck & in the news, they could be feeling like, if people find out what's in the containers, then they're done.

Maybe their friends are turning on them & turning them in.

They don't seem to be trying to remove the containers. They're just trying to dig the ship out instead.
