Whoa! I always liked the slant six and what some people have been able to achieve with that engine. Lots of info. on Youtube Quoting: Endtimewatchman10 You'd like this then- a 1st gen Barracuda with the baby 170CI slant six that runs a certified 132.85 mph average of two runs. He says he shifts it at 7000 RPM. [link to www.motortrend.com (secure)] I had a buddy long long ago who had a 170 in a '61 Lancer and I can testify that that little booger would SCREEEEEEEEAM and not blow up no matter how much it was abused. Imagine, just imagine if they made it a 450 cid V12! |

Whoa! Soooo... uhhh... yeah..... here's Nick's personal Mopar he bought last century. He don't know how to start it so it's mounted on a trailer and he has the shop sweeper/toilet guy drive him around while he pretends he's mechanical Master of His Destiny on an inflated inner tube. Sooo..... yeah..... you can see why Nick fell in luv with this cross ram baby.... Even if it's a Mopar ghost of days gone by... like Grandma Nicholas...haunting his soul... for ever more.... Whoa! I thought from the start 2, 750's=1500 CFM were stupid big compared to 500s. At the end Nick reveals a single 750 can make 600HP on same engine...... yeah but...sho don't have the MYSTIQUE. Also interesting is those swoopy iron manifolds lost 20 HP and torque. Last Edited by DGN on 02/13/2023 10:25 PM |

I head sixes (6cyl) engines have damn strong bottom ends. They typically have 7 crankshaft journals. All the Big Three makers, same way. Its damn near impossible to blow the crank out of one of these blocks None are better than Ford's old 300 inline truck engine. One double helluva good industrial engine! These little guys torque curve comes up much faster than a typical V8. A properly built 6 banger is quite capable of spanking a bully V8. I love them.. |

Nope! Better question is how much $$ you got? Start with any of the Ford series. 140, 170, or 200cid. They all had the same stroke length, but bore diameter was different. The 200 can be bored out to about 230 cid. The 300 truck engine gets its cubes from a longer than normal stroke length. Not a damn thing wrong with Chevy 250s, or Chrysler 225s if you swing that flavor.. Stay away from Ford's later 250. Its known for cracked blocks at the top of the block deck, and a compression check will show a blown head gasket with pressure leaking into the cylinder next to it. Besides, that 250 was a smog hag! Ford destroyed it with trying to make it emissions. Compliant. It never ran right, even new. Easy power is achieved with a nitrous bottle, but be careful! These motors are often built with compression ratios greater than 9:1. Probably won't blow it up, but with nitrous oxide injection, you'd be pushing it. Perhaps the least cost approach would be to find an offenhouser intake, A nice open pipe header, install a MSD electronic ignition system, and a nice little carter 500cfm AFB carb. Next, get with a custom cam grinder, and have them make you a camshaft for hightorque. You'll have to tell them the above, or whatever else you decide to do, and they will grind you a perfect match. If your head has been shaved, make sure they know this.. Do the routine port / polish the head, and intake. If you do just the nitrous trick, be sure to run some notched pistons to try to get that compression ratio down to no more than 8.5:1 Also while in there replace those valves with stellight type. These old engines were designed to run on leaded gasoline that provided valve stem lubrication by the lead in the gasoline. Old engines on modern gas is a great recipe for creating valve stem leakage of oil into the cylinder. Stellight valves stop all of this. Your welcome,, |

Drive them awhile, throw them away, go buy another. U mean like when a gizmo fails, it's gonna cost U $1000 because.... Its really not even that! Modern vehicles have no knowledge of their parents, their ancestors, nothing. Every year, things change. Under the hood, they are really LGBT confused. Hell yes they perform very well, but that doesn't mean they love you. My old 1963 390V8 Galaxy would actually fix itself when not running right. Time after time, little things would happen, then after a few days, the problem would go away, never to return. Cars with a soul? There is no way you can understand this concept, unless you've ever owned an Air Cooled VW. The VW will teach you how to feel a car's soul! All the old cars had a soul, modern cars do not. Sorry, this is the only way to explain this.. My first car was a VW. You've no idea what a VW can teach you. Only those that have owned an Air cooled VW can relate to this.. |

Whoa! Thanks, OP. That really takes me back. Those Max Wedge manifolds are so badass. Hot-tuning throttle floor and needle valves. Yikes !! Lived in CA during the golden age of junk >'85. Lots of super-junk in the yards to build something hot and wild. Had a 302 Maverick with smogged 2V, built a honking 4V with 351W heads, ported with 1.94/1.60 Manley valves, TRW flattops, X-plane intake, roller rockers etc. Had a blast driving something that felt the torque of my arm on almost every bolt. Cheers. PS: Virgil Exner did nothing wrong. |
