Those freaking engines were up linked to satellites for real time data monitoring. This information just doesn't disappear. Also this would explain why US ships were so aggressive about making sure they were the only ones in the area it went down. We all heard rumblings that there was either secret tech that was wanted and/or the AIDS researchers lost. Other than the plane secretly landing at Diego Garcia this makes the most sense.
