"Mate Grande", the new active volcano discovered in Chilean Patagonia

After five years of research, geologists from the University of Chile discovered an active volcano in Chilean Patagonia, 5,000 years old and named "Mate Grande", in honor of the culture of mate in that area, reported this Tuesday the study center.

The prestigious journal Nature Scientific Reports published this week the study "Cortical failure of the rapid sliding intravolcanic arch of Liquiñe-Ofqui on the subduction of the triple point of Chile" in which the existence of this new volcano in Aysén is reported. 1,400 kilometers south of Santiago.

The volcano, with a caldera 5 kilometers in diameter, is located 80 kilometers southwest of Coyhaique and northwest of Hudson Volcano, in the middle of the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault, name of a set of geological faults that run about 1,200 kilometers in a north-south direction from the BioBío Region to the Gulf of Penas, in Aysén.
