AM radio is easy to jam. Consider all electronic comms null and void when they make the move. I guess it's back to smoke signals. No. No smoke signals. Seriously, they will give away your position for miles around. That is suicide in an Apocalyptic situation. The best you can really do in an Apocalyptic situation is simple. - avoid populated areas - secure as many resources as you can - get used to night time and darkness as your new best friends if they are not have such places in your Heart already - do NOT willy nilly trust strangers - if you have a family and/or friends trust them at your own peril - however, if you do have any family and/or friends try to stick with Christian principles as best as y'all can muster - know you will always be hunted for the rest of your life - you may have to join the New American Resistance Movement just to enhance your survival probabilities Good luck... you will ceaselessly need it. Time to go back to Ham radios? Not a Ham junkie, but I know like in Cali...they took down the “repeaters” I think they are called, so you can t really rely the messages anymore, simply talk to people nearby. If Cali is doing it, I’m sure others are planning something similar. Anyone with some experience know what the state of Ham radio is these days? This is not quite true. The State of California does not allow for private repeaters on State government property. You can still put them up on private property and follow the FCC rules. Repeaters are rather expensive and require some maintenance. That said, in a SHTF world, I have no idea how many repeaters would stay up and running. Either they have no power OR certain elements might "take them out". Practice communicating on simplex. Radio to radio(s). You will not get the distance but it is a reliable type of comm. Also, practice with low power. You might have to power up with an inverter if the electricity goes out. |

Purchase a Wilson magnet antenna for about $45. Also pick up Wilson 12v DC cigarette style power cord for about $15. That would be for your automobile. Not the best set up but it is easy for most people. The magnet antenna can also be for your house if you place it outside. Get it on a large thin piece of metal for a ground plane. A mobile style CB radio can plug into your 120v home outlet with a small converter. At 4 watt AM or 12 watt single side band, 10 amp would be plenty. A $35 unit that works with the Wilson cigarette style cord for the car. |

Most are in the VHS or UHF bands because of performance such as antenna length. I highly recommend the new FRS units at 2 watts. Good for the neighborhood area.
