Over 1500 above ground nuclear tests never ignited the atmosphere, but the radioactive particles they left blowing about in the atmosphere have given (and are still giving) millions of people lung cancer. Thankfully cigarette smoking was available to catch all the blame.
John Wayne's death (blamed on smoking) actually came from his making a movie in New Mexico at a testing ground. Him and half the cast died in ensuing years, all because they were "smokers."
