And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25 And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Pilate and Herod both questioned Jesus and they both found He was NOT guilty of the crimes the people had accused Him of.

Pilate even gave a choice to the crowd to either free Jesus , or free a rebel who had committed murder. And the people hated Jesus so much that they chose to free the murderer.

Hence why Pilate said " What is the truth? " because people didn't care what the truth actually was , they just wanted to have their way.
