I highly doubt you have to argue your way out of it. Who cares what they think if you say no..

Re: The “do you want to round up to the dollar and donate your change” while buying something else scam
When the hell did this shit become acceptable? Every time I buy something they ask if I went to donate my change to some bullshit. I have to argue with the cashier each fucking time.

These big businesses get your spare change and collect hundreds of thousands of weak stupid peoples money. They donate this money in their name and then these fucks write off that amount from their taxes.

So essentially these million dollar companies are manipulating you to steal your money to pay their own taxes.

I am looking for ideas to end this shit or if you have any thoughts

Re: The “do you want to round up to the dollar and donate your change” while buying something else scam
Let's work this out:

you buy a $.90 item.

the cashier asks if you want to donate $.10 out of the dollar roundup.

you say yes

the business reports and is charged for regular income on the profit portion of the $.90

In OP's scenario the $.10 is written off towards the profit portion of the $.90 income?

It seems more like they would write off the entire $.10 which is completely fair since they made no profit on it anyways - it was not income to begin with. It has no affect on the other part of the income.

I am willing to listen to how this would be structured for writeoff on the actual income portion that was owed.

I give food people the same flat tip of 5 bones I've always given to bartenders who deliver good drinks. The first time they violate that, they get severely demoted along with their company. No exceptions. It moves along from there.

It’s a pain in the ass. I hate it. It was a while ago, but there was one time I went to Best Buy and there were three different questions. I think one was a donation question, one was joining their club back when it had a fee and one was a magazine subscription. Fuck. I don’t have a half hour to waste listening to all their spiels on what should be a two minutes transaction! I didn’t go back for a good long time and when I did, they weren’t doing it anymore.

douche...donations are just that.

the company can keep 90% of that 10 cents and donate 1 cent, and its a donation.

the rest is taken for "expenses"

free 9n cents. why do you think all the billionaires made more money while idiots in line made less year over year?

That's not why. The WHY is part of the program to end use of coin and then slippery slope to currency. Recall when they said that there was a shortage? The businesses are being discouraged or limited by their banks to provide rolled coins and they have only so much to make change with. They are encouraged to come up with endless "round up" schemes to get around the fact they don't have much change in the tills because people are being maneuvered into using debit cards and cashless transactions.

There's so many scams these days it'd make your head spin. Nearly all businesses now are deploying subterfuge to either acquire your information or waste your time. There has always been fine print but they've crossed the line now.

I tend to think this is probably very true.

Last year in Safeway supermarket, during the panic about accepting cash bc germs etc- they had 8 self checkouts- 4 on one side card only- 4 on the other cash and card.

Card only side was usually empty ( im in a rural area, lots of farmers etc so lots of old school cash users)

They change the machines- to 6 card only and 2 ( one on each side) cash and card,The machines had also been changed to a different type.Huge queue for the cash machines- no one using the 6 card only and everyone muttering it was stupid.

When i finally got to checkout , the total was 17$ approx and i paid with a 50$.

" Would you like to donate the change to some fucking charity"-
No i do not want to donate my 33$ to god know what- chose No option.. screen froze and wouldnt give me my change, another 10 min at the checkout waiting for staff to fix shit.

the next time I went there and used cash at the self checkout- on selecting " No you cant have my change for your scum charity shit"- it froze again- this time I asked to see the manager and made a formal complaint.

I told them , having 2 out of 8 checkouts as cash only and always having a massive queue was silly-I also told them I resented charities begging everytime i paid cash( this was besides the screen freeze glitch).

heres what i was told-

They could' make note' of my complaint, but it was head office that controlled the self checkouts and they had no choice or say in how many there were and that HO had just rearranged them and installed the new charity begging cash machines- and that they are just a branch blah blah and i should contact head office. They then said head office wanted to scale down cash self checkouts because they were getting stolen from(?? sounded like bs to me)- I asked why the card only checkouts did not beg for change and cash ones did and the manager had no answer for that one.

Stupid clerks can't count out change these dayz.

The amount is right on the screen & they can't count it out in coins.

All part of going cashless.

There is a walmart in my area that is going into remodel soon. When they finish they will no be accepting cash, checks, money orders or any other form of cash.

So...that will eliminate that pesky "change" thing. Everything will be debit or credit card thing instead.

If you want....go to the bank and get a roll of each type of coinage....for a souvenir or trophy or relic for your personal museum of the past....cause it is going going gone.

pfft, yeah right they donate it to Black Lives Matter type organizations, it's hardly a challenge anymore for them to elude 'the law', they are the law.

i know what you mean, they ALL do it, everywhere you go , 'do you want to donate a dollar' it's on the credit card swiper everywhere, i think i'm done and then I get called back to answer the question, do you want to donate a $1 to the 1% that spend 24/7 figuring out how to enslave your great great great great grandchildren?

My policy is never donate to charities. I used to go with "HELL NO! Don't you know the CEOs pocket that money to buy themselves yet another mansion with 17 bathrooms!?"

Now, I always forcefully blurt out: "NO, I WOULD NOT!" Then the cashier looks at me like do they need to duck, I add: "But thank you for asking" with a self-pleased grin, and then you can hear everyone exhale, the bagger boy, the cashier, the rest of the people in line, the line behind my back, the people who were fumbling for their phones to start recording.

This thread prompts me to try next: "No, I would NOT! Would YOU like to round DOWN my bill to the LESSER dollar and donate my change back to ME? Hey, in 'rona times, this will help me greatly.” I shall decide whether to further add: "NO?? YOU SAID NO TO ME?? Would you like to speak that into the microphone so everyone can hear what a tightwad you are, to refuse to donate my money back to me in COVID times??"

Pregnant pause....

"Kiddin'! So... How does it feel being shamed right back?" Click tongue and walk away with my stuff.

For the easily manipulated of you, might wanna try that one in a different town than were you live. Me? IDGAF!

Definitely not.
And I always tell them that begging during a transaction is a turn off.

And don't feel you need to round up your change specifically for Goodwill. Your purchasing of items at Goodwill gives them enough profit.
 Quoting: Butch DeFeo

And, you're purchasing an item being taxed a second and perhaps third time. This is going to away, one reads.

Giving no more change. Casey's convenience stores in the midwest asks every single time. Special Olympics gets money (our tax money), and the government's policies vis-a-vis the American Medical Assn. has had a large hand in messing up kids. I gotta say no because that donation has already been made, respectfully.
