this is the best worse case DOOM I've read and can see as a probable future having researched the vaxx.

It's funny that the pensioners and natives are the ones who have gotten "priority" letters from the government to jump in line.

We sleep under the stars in tennis courts on foam pads with sleeping bags. We use local rivers to get water and haul it back to the parks using toy haulers pulled by horses and home depot plastic containers with tops to hold the water, 5 gallon buckets to fill the 50 gallon tubs.

I don't know when the card readers stopped working at gas stations. I know that people know how to dispense gas at stations using the register and telling it that it received pre pay and they do it sparingly since nobody wants to waste it until we find a way to get it moving again.

Nobody wanted to go back. They wanted to go kick some ass and kill bad guys. They are dudes. That's what dudes like to do. I had seen enough death and revenge, even on Bill Gates, it's not like it brought back my sister or anything.

In the end, I wanted to go back for my own selfish reasons, to be in a better time and heal, but the time I was to go back to was decided by the group based on various factors, it was voted on in the end that I go back one year.

It's like if you found a new food and wanted to try it to see if it is good. You wouldn't eat 20 right away. You would take a single bite at first and see if your tongue went dry or it made you want to hurl.

We put the machine on the lowest setting, one year and I took my chances. Nobody else wanted to risk getting melted or electrocuted. I was the only one in the group who didn't want to pick up a gun and kick some ass.

If one of them came back, they would come back here and start shooting folks and probably end up getting shot in the process; they were hardened by war and unable to return to civilian life.

As a woman, I don't like the stress of the war and I preferred to go back to a better time. Sure, it would have been nice to go back further and save lives of those I loved but I already grieved and wouldn't want to go through that again and if it worked and the mission to stave off the deterioration of society had succeeded, then as a result, my past self would never have gone back in time and my short stint with my twin would have evaporated back in to another timeline where I would have all these weird memories of her dying. It seemed better psychologically to simply go back one year. The guys didn't want to risk me catching covid even though I told them I knew the cure. They argued that if my sister died then it wasn't fullproof but she died before I found out about the cure. They had made up their mind though and since the controls are on the outside of the device along with the power up button, it was up to them and they decided to send me back one year so I could quickly get back to them if it didn't work and recalibrate the next plan with the intel I gather. I can only live so long so the further back they send me, the older I will be each time I catch up to them and we will have less tries that way. I am not young to begin with.

Honestly, the only bad thing about this future is the internet going down. If we could get rid of the blood cult and their foot soldiers AND keep the internet and other infrastructure, I'd call that a win win.

If you have thermal sensors you can find the vents for the elite bunkers at night.
You can plug them. Build a fire on them. After you block the entrances you find.
You can thermal scan the ground near the vents to look for hidden exits. Just after dark when the sun is no longer heating the ground shallow tunnels and entrances will lose heat at a different rate than surrounding areas.

The power grid

I don't know how this works. Apparently, there are many different power grids and some are more autonomous than others.

Some are up and some are down, I suppose, but gas isn't moving and banks aren't open and stores are looted.

I happened to be in an area that lost a lot of utilities.

When we went up to Washington, we saw areas that still had power, like Bill Gates, for example and places that did not have power as well.

When we stopped at gas stations for gas, we explained what we were doing and the people manning the gas stations didn't give us any trouble. They wanted something in trade and we had stocked up on money and made trades for gas even though we could have just taken it if we wanted to, we didn't want to upset the balance. We had enough to trade with and the attendants knew that we didn't have to give them shit if we didn't want to as we outnumbered them in guns. Still, we made nice and traded various monies and by monies I don't mean greenbacks. Money is anything somebody needs in the future. It might be anything. One guy asked if we had any perfume he would take in trade. I had some and he let us fill up all our vehicles and he sat there and just smelled the bottle the whole time and closed his eyes. You see weird shit in a dystopian future. People value whatever they value...a scent to remember...one guy just asked us to chill for a bit and sing with him so he could feel normal again. We sat around and sang the gilligans island theme since it was one everyone could remember. It brought tears to his eyes and he let us fill up our tanks.

Those were special moments. The nevada desert was not one of those moments. We lost guys in that firefight and it was really, really sad. It really pissed off the remainder of us as we had gotten rather attached to the members of our team, but we made new friends with those who mutinied within area 51 and we are stronger becaause of it, so those guys didn't die in vain. We now have a foothold underground and access to a system that can take us around the country to communicate with others in other places and help connect people into a larger community and build our army to try to get the trucks moving again and get shit delivered again. It may take a long time to get everything working again. We have no idea what the level of humanity is around the rest of the country. It could be worse than we imagined or maybe better, but probably not good.

We are the west coast contingent. We have members from all over the left coast. A lot of survival types, vets and tradesmen, people good with a gun and a tool or two. There are about 150 of us in total and we travel in several buses. We started with less than half that and picked up more members along the way.
