Skies from Jacksonville to Miami were lit up by a rare fireball late Monday that prompted calls to the National Weather Service and more than 200 reports to the American Meteor Society.

The lightshow, which included a long fiery tail and bright explosion at the end, occurred at 10:16 p.m.

NASA astronomer Bill Cooke said the unanticipated fireworks were caused by an estimated 900-pound asteroid fragment hitting the Earth's atmosphere at 38,000 mph. It broke apart about 23 miles above the Atlantic, generating the energy equivalent of 14 tons of TNT.

"These things just come at random," Cooke said. "The atmosphere will break apart anything smaller than a football field."

Hey man I seen one of those while on Patrol near Boynton Beach one night . it was cool thing to see in the middle of the night.

It's part of the whole "we're about to be pelted with surprise asteroids and meteorites" thing.

Just a fireball. I’ve reported multiple fireballs at amsmeteors.org. That’s not to low. It definitely fragmented at a low altitude, which means it could have left debri on the ground. I wish they played the recording longer. There may have been a sonic boom off in the distance.

Was coming back from road trip and was just miles from RDU International Airport (NC) and first thing I thought was, 'Oh great! Fuckin' plane crash incoming and some neighborhood is gonna' have a bad night.'
