The VAERS system is a passive reporting system.
Since you don't seem to know what that means, I'll explain it to you -
The data are generated by people voluntarily making a report and these reports may be truthful and accurate or complete lies. There is no way of knowing.
On top of that, in a passive system there is no denominator to determine rates. IOW - Nobody knows how many people the reports represent. Without a denominator the data is useless for even the most basic comparisons.
An active reporting system like the VSD (data from various insurance companies) actually petitions certain known groups of people so the number of participants vs number of events can be calculated. The VSD also collects medical records with which to check the accuracy of the reports and for any confounders.
With this data non-spurious correlations can be found.

Please explain to the class how a passive system like VAERS can be used for anything than hypothesis generation.
