That ground will pull that water further and further out. A 10in terracotta olla will water at least 1.5ft on any side. More like 2ft in this soil. You probably can't see it here, but if you stick your finger just under the surface right in the middle of this 4ft square, you'll see that it is saturated even in the middle. The evaporation effect alone of the water coming to the surface in the heat will make those seeds germinate. The rain will do the rest. It's the most efficient way to water in the desert and we'll let the monsoon summer rains do the rest since we're attempting to work with the seasons anyway. https://twitter.com/_/status/1646196805632425984 |

One 10in olla at back of the pumpkin/squash square. That will give me 19 ollas in the ground. When they start turning brown at the bottom, they've finished their cycle for the year. They were troopers through the winter and I'll do these Wihols next cool season but I'm putting them by a southern Colorado fava bean I'm going to try this next cool season. It claims to be semi-xeric and winter hardy. We'll see. https://twitter.com/_/status/1646213736477380608 |

As the societal chaos grows, we also pray Christ's power grow in our lives and banish all darkness from our homes and gardens. Psalm 126 1{A Song of ascension.} When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. 2Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with song: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. 3The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad. 4Turn again our captivity once again, O LORD, as streams in the south flowing to the north. 5They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. 6He that goeth forth grimly, yet bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves. https://twitter.com/_/status/1646306854639898624 |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81975954 We ask the Lord to send the early and later rains that it might be a prosperous year of refreshing. And we will know that it is from Him. Psalm 72 5So may they honor You As long as the sun and moon endure, Through all generations. 6He shall come to us like mist upon a fleece, and like the showers that water the earth. 7In His days shall justice spring forth, And abundance of peace, Until the moon is no more. 8He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth. https://twitter.com/_/status/1645145850035978240 4-13-23 Don't tell me the Lord doesn't answer prayer. The variety I plant is called Beauregard. This variety produces potatoes just under the plant under the hill, so they are easier to dig than certain other types of sweet potatoes. I use a rake and shovel to make the hills. I have a machine that can make sweet potato hills as fast as I can walk, but I am too old to start and run the thing these days. It is an old two-wheel Gravely tractor with a rotary plow. These can still be found used at sales. If you plan to grow a large patch of sweet potatoes this is one thing you should look into. Quoting: danjan 71139729 You're making a wise choice to plant sweet potatoes. No other crop gives the results of sweet potatoes. It's the single best all around survival crop in the world, imo. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80475805 United States 04/14/2023 08:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is Eastern Orthodox Good Friday, National Gardening Day, and the 1st evening of Enochian/Essene Abib/Nisan east of Prime Meridian. The 1st will be tomorrow evening here west of Prime Meridian. You may be busy in the garden this weekend as many will be getting started. Me, I'm out for the weekend on a load near the Texas coast. So it's a quieter weekend mostly involving last minute planning and making sure I have this thing lined up how it needs to go for desert monsoon season. If you are getting started this weekend, God bless on the warm season. I really think the El Nino weather pattern is going to change up our monsoon this year in Almanac zone 14 Desert Southwest. Be sure to check your region forecast as well at almanac.com. There's more rain coming for the south. |

Looks like the all the ollas are getting filled on time. Many little sproutlings are starting to emerge from this south square. Not even sure what most are yet as it's a poly culture mix. I am glad to see a Green Poinsettia coming up, though. Forgot I put those seeds in the mix for this summer. Any Euphorbia basically can be substituted in Dr Scudder's Poinsettia tincture. Not as colorful or big as red poinsettia, still this desert green poinsettia is a useful medicinal in very small doses (as in about 10 drops to 4oz of water and one teaspoon every few hours, which works out to a fraction of a drop in each dose). It can be still classified among the baneful herbs, but Poinsettia has its own medicinal qualities too. A useful one to keep around in the desert smer garden. https://twitter.com/_/status/1648483340906024962 |

You can harvest Acelgas root just like beet root. Chard/Acelgas/Beets are all the same plant. It's just that beet varieties have been cultivated to have a more bulbous root. Actually, I prefer a straight Acelgas root because it dries quicker for keeping dry root stock. But you can eat it just like a fresh beet if you want. I like to keep dehydrated roots and greens on hand because they make quick soups and stews in the winter when I'm really wanting those greens. https://twitter.com/_/status/1648712725424635905 |

They say not to cut the leaves off when transplanting rumex/rhubarb. Just leave the leaves on and they will feed that root while it's adapting to the new ground. They'll all die back but it will soon put out new leaves. A rumex root is nearly impossible to kill. They really want to grow. And it doesn't require much encouragement to get them to grow. https://twitter.com/_/status/1648723522469130240 |

In fact the 7 books of Roman medicine still extant are said to be taken in large part due to Cleopatra being a patron of medicine and remedies in the Hellenistic world. She also championed the use of ollas in gardens, which just happens to be a Greek invention. One of her hair loss remedies is thus: Rx. Cort: arundinis, & Spuma nitri, ana {ounce} ss. picis liquida, q. s. f. vng. *. To restore hayre in an inueterate Alopecia [or baldness]. It will be [ B] very profitable daily to shaue the place, and to rub it with a lin|nen cloath, and then to anoint it, by which meanes the hayre will grow with more speed. Cleopatra.
