Three people were killed and two others were seriously injured in a shooting early Sunday at a crowded Wisconsin bar, prompting a two-state search for at least one gunman who authorities said targeted the victims.

Gunfire broke out inside and outside the Somers House Tavern in Kenosha, Wisconsin, around 12:42 a.m. when a man who had been kicked out of the bar returned with a handgun and opened fire, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said at a news conference Sunday morning.

"We don't believe this was a random act," Beth said. "From what I've been told, the three people who passed away probably knew each other. This was a targeted situation."

Beth said it was not immediately clear why the gunman was asked the leave the tavern.

"This person that was asked to leave wasn't cooperating with the management there," Beth said. "But I believe he returned a short time later and came in and did the shootings."

Beth did not rule out the possibility that more than one gunman was involved in the fatal shooting, saying more than one gun could have been used.

He said detectives are combing through surveillance video and interviewing witnesses in an attempt to identify the suspect or suspects. Law enforcement agencies throughout southeast Wisconsin and northern Illinois were searching for the suspect, the sheriff said.

Family, friends remember 3 men killed in Somers tavern shooting


Raasch and her friends identified the three men killed as Kevin Donaldson, Cedric Gaston and Atkeen Stevenson.

For some reason Kenosha police haven't released the name of the killer yet. I'm hoping it wasn't a white guy.

"Mr. Vinson had been involved in a bumping in the tavern, this was a shoulder-to-shoulder situation, that had resulted in a fight occurring. Mr. Vinson had certainly been punched in a fight in the tavern," District Attorney Michael Graveley said of the shooting. "This was literally over nothing, it was literally over a minor dispute."

Investigators said Vinson was kicked out of the bar but returned and opened fire.

Two were pronounced dead at the scene.

The third died on the way to the hospital.

Beth said at least 200 pieces of evidence were collected at the scene.

It's not clear how many shots may have been fired.

He added that one victim shot back at Vinson outside the bar.

Something isn't adding up.

Vinson had been arrested three times for illegal possession of a gun prior to the shooting, Graveley said.

In 2011, Vinson was arrested in Racine County for having a gun as a juvenile.

In Kansas City, Missouri, in 2016, he was convicted of illegal use of a weapon, a felony there, and sentenced to probation.

In 2018 in Racine County, he pleaded no contest to carrying a concealed weapon, a misdemeanor, and possession of marijuana, both as a repeater. He was sentenced to seven days in jail, online court records show.

Another gun possession charge in 2018 was dismissed by prosecutors.
