Yeah, this is what makes me cringe about "centrists" who use language like "both sides" have problematic elements. While true, it completely ignores the scale of the problem.

So my church is getting a new pastor. I saw this couple with two kids that nobody talks too much, felt bad for them and went to make conversation.

I asked, "What country is the new pastor from?" I asked this because his name and his kids names are all unpronounceable mish mash of letters. Also I know we are affiliated with a lot of churches in Nigeria and Kenya - where old fashioned Christianity is doing better than America right now.

Anyway, the man - a white man who's wife is some sort of Asian (and they have two little Asian looking children playing nearby) answers me "The pastor is AMERICAN." I said, "Oh that's nice, but what is his background? I mean what culture is he from?" Guy says, "What difference does it make?!" Then some old hippie at the table looks at the Asian woman and asks, "What country are YOU from?" She looked insulted - which was the point - and before I knew it these three assholes all had their knickers in a twist and ready to label me a racist, xenophobe etc!

I told them I was interested in pronouncing the pastors name correctly, as well as his children's names, and learning about his culture. I left them alone and realized why no one was talking to them! Pissed me off though ...

Which is why a so-called centrist or moderate years ago, when the center of the spectrum was to the right of where it is today, could legitimately be considered a non-ideologue. But to be a "centrist" in 2021 is like calling oneself a "non-flaming liberal."
