yeah I've known this since the beginning of 2020. I'm just getting tired of it now. People are SOOOO set in their ways. They actually believe that everything in the world right now is the way it is. When in truth, it's all calculated.

COVID, real threat or not, is being used as one of the tools to nudge us rapidly into a total-surveillance society.

China has been ramping up tech specifically in the areas of surveillance, seamless integration of people's social lives with tech through stuff like street-camera-phone connectivity, "social credit", AI monitoring of people's phone calls and web-surfing habits, big data crunching, predictive programs to monitor those perceived as "antisocial" and so on. It is making these moves so it can solidify it's draconian assault on human dignity by becoming even more authoritarian.

Until quite recently, it was a bedrock assumption of the West that authoritarian societies stifiled "creativity", and that "freedom" was necessary to create an environment in which technology could advance through such creativity. But here is the kicker: China's Orwellian social system gives it an advantage when it comes to certain types of tech, particularly the application of big data, AI, and connectivity to social systems and a seamless integration of online life with daily life. Because of its ability to manipulate its citizens so cruelly, it an deploy technology in a way that it can't be deployed in the west, with classical western core values of freedom, individual autonomy, and privacy. For the first time, an authoritarian society seems to be in the process of outclassing the free world in certain key tech areas.

There has been a deep and palpable terror at the dawning realization of this fact growing among two key Western power nodes: Silicon Valley and Social Media Big Tech, and pentagon strategists. This is pushing these two power nodes closer together, as their shared fear of "falling behind" China motivates closer collaboration.

This new fear-driven military-tech business alliance is alarming for several reasons. On the one hand, I will give them credit for identifying a new problem and working to seek solutions. I don't want Chinese hegemony, and I'm glad our military strategists and tech gurus are on the ball about it. But the danger is that in seeking to beat China, we could find ourselves becoming a mirror image of China. Surrendering freedom, liberty, privacy, and autonomy as a dual corporate-military vice squeezes us towards "competitive authoritarianism."

Thus I see an accelerating apeing of Chinese tech-based totalitarianism. China introduces digital yuan; a few weeks later it's in the news the US may be rushing to do the same. China has a social credit system; we are inching ever closer to similar schemes, with vaccination internal tracking passports and a new idea floated to reward and punish companies based on proposed "sustainability and social justice scores". And all this is happening at warp speed under the thumb of democrats. Gives me the willies, frankly.

Power is its own end, in one sense. By monitoring people, you heighten your power over them. High-functioning psychopaths who dominate the elite seek to expand their power constantly for its own pleasure.

Beyond that...The CCP in China is obsessed with maintaining power over its people, and while I dislike everything they stand for, in a sense their fears are valid. Chinese history is punctuated by extremely violent, terrifying events whenever strong central control is lost. Their surveillance efforts are very effective in enforcing control over a massive population in a resource-poor area where violent civil outbreaks are common enough in history to be the norm rather than the exception.

As for the West, it fears falling behind China and as I noted, it is adopting the geostrategic doctrine that repression, rather than freedom, will be the only way to stay ahead in the "tech race.

Your mobile phone is connected with a facial recognition database for all 1.2 billion Chinese, and these two are in turn connected with the forrest of street cameras and even in-home survalience like "smart TVs" that watch you. AI algos record all behavior and when you deviate from behavior marked as "safe" or "normal" the AI flags you for closer analysis by a live human. Analyzed behavior includes everything from the route you walk to work to the time you usually go to bed to facial expressions that tell if you are "too bored" during one of Xi's speeches.

This is strange considering this is all some of us have been thinking about for more than two years.

Most of these ideas have been tossed around on GLP since the early 2000s, in one form or another.

In a sense none of this is new to anyone who has been paying attention. It's this very lack of novelty that can be so paralyzing in some cases. "Yep, I knew it was coming." Mmm-hmm. Did you do anything to prepare? Some did, some didn't -- but in some cases there is almost nothing the "little guy" could have done anyway. The scale is too massive.

And although it sounds cliche/sci-fi to say it, I think it is a very strong possibility that our networks will at some point become "self-aware" and develop a mind of their own, so to speak.

I mean. It was sci-fi maybe 25 years ago. But now it's reality. That's the only way to go from here. Self-Aware AI.

It will be straight out of a movie. Something like iRobot or something where we all have a robot (whether that be a highly advanced phone or watch). It will report everything bad to those in power.

And the worst part is that we will be told it is for our own safety and the betterment of society. It will happen slowly but surely.

They'll start with more advanced phones, facial recognition, then microchips, we'll be able to connect with the internet via thought.

Anyways I'm just going on a tangent but yes . That is how the future looks like in the next 50 years.
