Mask worms are real
I saw this vid and I have a microscope so I checked and got the same result! WTF are these things?
I took a brand new NHS mask sealed in plastic, opened it and looked with a 200x microscope. I could see black fibers? everywhere. But when I took a cotton bud with my saliva on it and placed it in contact with the mask the black fibers move!!!!
I have no idea what these things are but I found that if the mask is boiled then dried the black things remain but do not move!

Good work, OP! Can you put the fibers in a small amount of sugar water (petri dish?) and monitor them for a while.

Do they start moving in water? Do they start growing longer? Report back your findings. Thanks!

Re: Mask worms are real
This is in interesting and it's great that people are making videos capturing the phenomenon, but someone with some ability to get better answers needs to step in and figure out exactly what this is.

Maybe it's nothing and is something that's always been there, but I would assume that this would be known.

If not something known, what is it? Is it just in masks and not other fabric, has anyone investigated that?

Really thinking if it's something new, that it's parasitic that and has adapted over the last year with the exponential wearing of face masks. The warm, moist, and probably bacterial laden environment might be something that is ripe for whatever it is. But if this was the case, it's not like it knows the difference between a fresh unused mask and a blanket, so maybe not.

Just not seeing how it could be something sinister since masks come from everywhere. Walmart, Amazon, Target, local stores, Etsy, the gas station. I mean they can't all be manufactured by the some company, and if not, compromised such that someone is intentionally contaminating, that just doesn't seem feasible.

A scientist with expertise needs to step in and identify what it is, once that's determined, whether or not its a threat and dangerous.

Also, what happens to the masks if you microwave them? Do they start burning or is it ok to do that?

If microwaving the masks is an option. Do the fibers move after microwaving? Thanks!

Re: Mask worms are real
Boiling the mask will make it useless...strip it of static charge.

Pass air through it at 165 or higher for 20-30 minutes.

You can do that with a simple dehydrator.

That is how to sterilize the masks by the way.

Don't wash them or use alcohol.

Try it.

See if the little buggers live.

I doubt it unless they are very hardy extremophiles.

Why?

Because it would kill YOU...AND MOST OTHER EUKARYOTUC LIFE SUCH AS BACTERIA, PARASITES ETC.

Microwaving besides being dangerous if the mask has any metal would also strip it of static charge.

Do not sterilize them in the microwave.

I don't really care if the mask doesn't work after boiling/microwaving. It's not going to stop tiny viruses from entering anyway, right?

I'm talking about these cheap surgical masks everyone wears.

No, the surgical masks and even N95's will only stop fomites (droplets)...if they still have electrostaic charge.

You would require a full hazmat suit with your own oxygen supply to be safe from a virus. They don't wear surgical masks in the laboratory where they examine these viruses.
