It was in very rough seas so the crew was not able to secure the spacecraft and it felled overboard. The entire crew were sworn to secrecy, a few were killed for speaking out. It was not until the 'Space Race', specifically the moon missions, between the US and USSR that gave the US the perfect excuse and cover for a salvage operation. The US Navy sent ships all over the world under the pretense of surveying sites for a water landing of US space vehicles.

The salvage operation was successful and the alien spacecraft was sent into hiding the Nevada desert at a site code named Area 52. Area 51 was a successful diversionary tactic for the public. The X-wing spacecraft was largely reversed-engineered and flown. However, it was found to be designed mainly for non-atmospheric operations as pilots found the craft difficult to maneuver in atmospheric flights.
