My father was a heart patient and I was also on the low end and we were both prescribed 50,000 IU pills twice a month.

I went for 5000 a day because 50,000 is big jolt to the system and took another test 2 months later and basically was just below average.

Now I just take it when I can remember and try to get 20 minutes of sun on the face during warm months.
