Did you have any lightning storms lately? It can arc switches.

It rained today, there was a power outage last week from a storm, might have been lightning.

My husband just replaced the switch in the kitchen, so that ceiling light is now fixed.

Maybe it was the storm and power outage that put a few old fixtures over the edge?

Those lights were out when the power went out and back on a few hours later.

We lose power all the time where we live, old equipment, Cleveland Ohio.

Just odd this hasn’t happened before.

Well, replacing the switch in the kitchen did not work 100%.

It seemed to work, then did the same thing, works a few times than stopped working and stayed on.

We turned on and off the fuses, all three are on different fuses.

We do have some mice in the walls.

Your ground wire or neutral is shorted.

Would that affect three different ceiling lights unrelated on different fuses?

Our electric is so old, most is not grounded...yeah I know. Husband is an engineer, this is his department.

Make sure they don't start smoking. Switches can go bad over time.

The original fuse box has 12 places for fuses in a configuration of 3 across and 4 down.

The problem spots involve the entire row of fuses in the 3rd row down.

The problem is fixed in the middle and right fuses in that row if the first fuse is unscrewed.

So, with that fuse unscrewed, which controls the ceiling light in the upstairs back hall near the fuse box.

The ceiling light in the kitchen works with the middle fuse and the dining room light with the fuse on the right.

The kitchen and dining room ceiling lights go on and off as they should only when the fuse controlling the back hall light is unscrewed...disabled.

Ever since we have lived here the EMF radiation is large by the fuse box and the wall where the wires run.

The ceiling light in the upstairs back hall has 3 switch plates that control it. One in the back hall staircase going up to the up back hall, one where the main house enters the up back hall over the attached garage, and one near the back end of the up back hall.

One is a 4 way switch, two are 3 way switches. Could a faulty switch affect the other areas the other two fuses control?

Or is it likely there is a short in the fuse box, or wires in the ceiling or walls?

House is almost 100 years old, walls are made of plaster adhered to metal lathe with a knock down pebble finish that no one seems to be able to replicate for repairs, making replacing the electric a $$$ project.

Any suggestions on what kind of electrician to call?
