I think the "transition" will be a bit less dramatic than you imply. Yes, a LOT of people will be VERY upset about it. But you do what you have to do, and humanity will adjust. Some of that adjustment could very well be starvation, disease, violence, etc. That's not hard to imagine if you picture the customers of Walmart on a Saturday. But I DO believe there are more "good" people than "bad" people, and at some point we will level off and live in harmony with our environment instead of insisting on "conquering" it.

Also, we need to stop subsidizing the offspring of people who are not productive. Failed lifestyles are rewarded by subsidizing their offspring, while successful people are discouraged from having children. I don't think the consequences of a policy is difficult to predict.
