NASA Asteroid Exercise: there's nothing we could do

Interesting that a fission device would be more effective than a fusion device at displacing an incoming asteroid.

In a creepy way, this exercise parallels the Pandemic Exercise that took place just before the Covid outbreak.

I could have told them this without an expensive simulation

Even the fission vs. fusion bomb thing?

Ok. After reading the paper on neutron flux vs. X-ray flux, it makes perfect sense.

[link to www.llnl.gov (secure)]

Neutrons have a way higher cross-section (i.e. interaction strength) for hydrogen-containing materials than X-rays. So, it makes perfect sense that enhancing the neutron flux of a bomb over X-ray flux will result in more "push".

In other words, a neutron bomb would be more effective at deflecting an asteroid than a high-yield fusion bomb.
