The Nubian African plate is splitting from the Somalian African plate right along the East African rift zone. That rift zone is part of the Great Rift that goes up thru Ethiopia, the Red Sea and the Dead Sea. There is a shit load of old volcanos along this line, and a few active ones.

Recent eruptions occurred on 2 January 2010 and 8 November 2011.

In 2014, a new lava lake appeared at the volcano for the first time in 75 years. The previous lava lake at the volcano was emptied in the 1938 lava flow. The formation of the new lake occurred between June and August 2014. It reached a depth of 500 metres (1,600 ft).

Eruptive activity continues during 2020 at the summit caldera.

I have never seen this many in one year.

On average, there are about 50-70 volcanoes that erupt every year. Some of them erupt multiple times, while others only have one eruption.
