Learn, “how to-“ English, first.

You’ll gain much more out of life if you read books.

Seriously, coming from a amateur musician.

Unless you’re still 15...

Even so though, nah.

I've got a receiver hooked to the computer and a couple of big speakers on my desk, and I[m planning to hook to that. I'm sure a couple of watts will do me.

No lmao don't do that. Buy an amp dude. What's your budget?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79006926

Why not? I can afford better if there is a reason. they typically sell these cheap guitars with a small amp. I've got much better speaker available. I've got some open back speakers with 2 15's and 1 8" full range speaker. My desk speakers have 2 8" full range speakers.
All of this shit is stereo shit and not guitar shit and I know it's different.
 Quoting: Pilgrim001

Yes they are very different and a guitar would sound like crap if you plugged it into your stereo.
I suppose you could buy a multi-effects processor and use the headphone out jack to go into your receiver, but even that still lacks qualities of a real guitar amp.

Tube amps sound better than solid state amps but they're pricier. This is a good budget tube amp, I recommend starting with this: [link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

Make sure to use the proper fingers for the chords. If you do the easy way at the start its much harder afterward. If you learn properly youll end up being better than a lot of guitarists. Basic finger excercises are easy and will help a great deal.

But like the others here, youtube, I WISH it had been around when I was learning.

Re: I bought a guitar over the internet. What is the best way to learn out to play it?
Do you have a distortion pedal yet ?

Mew mew grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I wanted to play guitar soooooo badly after mastering guitar hero when I was like 12 mew mew

But I figured I'd *NEVER* bee able to do any crazy solos, so instead of a guitar, I got a bass guitar for Christmas when I turned 13 or so

I became an expert at Rock Band/Guitar Hero games which made me WANT to play the real instruments

Eventually by the time I was like 15 I finally got my first REAL guitar, the cheapie entry-level Fenders that look like Strats but aren't (forgot the name) I still have my guitar too :"33 (with kitty sticker on him) It's colour is teal and I changed the plate a long time ago to make it black, I really made the guitar my own mew mew, but the most I could ever really play was just every single NIRVANA song

I think once you can master EVERY NIRVANA song you're on the right track

Mew mew

Eventually I just stopped playing guitar as I embraced my true instrumental talent, the drumset MUAHAHAHAHAHA

The only band I ever gigged with was when I was playing drums mew mew and the biggest place we everrrrrr played with a bar/lounge called "Bottom Lounge" in Chicago, and we were supposed to play at this place called the "House of Blues" butttttttt the singer pissed me off mew mew so over a nice TACO-BURRITO dinner I just stormed off and said ffffffffawwwwkkkk thissssss and they never EVER played live AGAIN MUAHAHAHAHA

Okay here's some footage of that GAY purrrformance pls delete this

Rocksmith
Music video game produced by Ubisoft. Make sure the Rocksmith Real Tone Cable that goes from the guitar to the device you're playing on is included or you may have to buy it separately. I bought a copy years ago works great and lots of fun. Youtube has videos of players. Enjoy and good luck. [link to youtu.be (secure)] example: Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars - Rhythm Guitar

buy one of those and some decent earbuds. You will sound like shit and dont want the world hearing you. Learn your scales first and practice them. Then do a few youtube lessons of simple songs.
Nirvana is very simple if that appeals to you.

Also its important to realize alot of music only sounds like it does due to effect. Dont think your wrong if you dont sound like the actual song. Without the proper pedals some sounds just dont exist.

Rocksmith allows you to slow down the song by using the Riff Repeater. You can select multiple sections, up to the whole song, then adjust mastery level and speed. I happen to like this song so I'll use it as an example. [link to youtu.be (secure)] Rocksmith 2014 - DLC - Guitar - Rage Against The Machine "Bombtrack"

Tune to open-C and impress everyone with your cool sounds.

After a while tune to drop-D and do the same.

After a few months you'll have developed basic hand skills and will be ready for standard tuning.

Re: I bought a guitar over the internet. What is the best way to learn out to play it?
just a humble opinion, OP, I would advise you to learn the easiest "open" chords, such as G, C, D, E, Eminor, A, Aminor.

Even with those few chords there are plenty of songs that will have those chords in it. And they are relatively easy to play. Plenty of youtube videos on how to play open chords on a guitar.
it will take your fingertips getting used to pressing the strings against the guitar neck at first, but you will develop strength (and calluses) with regular practice.

Find your favorite bands, enter into a search engine, "chords and lyrics" for such and such band and whatever song you like.

If you learn a song that you like, it inspires you to play more, practice more.
Two or three songs that you like will get you playing for 20 minutes/half hour per day at least.
That's a good start, but pros always end up dedicating most of their waking hours to practicing.
which is why we're broke most of the time, unless we've sold our souls to the....oops....wrong forum....haha!

good luck OP. Rock on.

 Quoting: Pilgrim001
I have had many student, and the ones that improved practice and grasp the ideas, also do not try to learn to quickly, build the muscle memories in the beginning, this is key, this runs counterinstinctive to most, but less reps done evenly, and and slowly building speed but secondly to the requisite of evenness. Every note in a scale even metrically and dynamically. And every chord change as well. Even in time and pressure , don't even worry about expression at first. So delay the gratification of using what you are learning artistically, but contrary to that also make time for play time to make it fun, just focus more on fundementals right now

Practice a minimum of thirty minutes a day. I recommend one hour at least though... after learning basic chords in open position I would learn a jam band song if you like rock... learn the chords... get a backing track on YouTube and learn to play the chords with it, after several months when you get a command of the basic open position chords, and most likely power chords if you are doing rock, start to learn the basic scales for this music, mainly pentagon minor for this genre, and Lydian, Dorian , mixalydian modes etc. but really I will tell you the basic scales and arpeggios you need to really put it together, major scale and it's modes, natural minor and understanding the 6th mJor scale mode and it's relationship, harmonic minor ( when you really get advanced the altered mode of this scale) diminished half whole scale, and diminished arpeggio, pentagon is minor and major, with these scales you can play over anything, once you understand the relationships and how to reharmonize then you can get into accidental , and grace notes etc to get every modern technique you can think of,, just remember its a process, keep it fun and keep moving forward until you are pleased then enjoy.
It depends what you want out of the experience... as a professional musician I can tell you the road Is long but rewarding.it never ends you just keep improving if you want, and there is always more to learn. Currently I Am mastering gypsy jazz, Django style..... make it fun.. someone mentioned YouTube tutorials... anything like this is very useful, lessons are free and everywhere nowadays..
Learn what you like.... there is no shortage of info out there...
