did you receive an email from the website? is it possible you set your email to cc you another copy? or did you check some confirmation box you didnt understand when you joined the site? could be alot of ways it happened besides hacking....might even have clicked the wrong button when closing the original...got me curious now

It is possible to send email and determine the sender address at will.

I could right now send you an email using [email protected] , that wouldn't mean I hacked it, that would mean that the email system was designed by a moron.

We need to know what OS your using also to help.

It's dead easy to change the originating addy in Outlook to appear as anything you want.

But it sounds like someone's hitting on you. Look at the mail headers.

I'm obviously NOT a computer whiz, but this is the
FIRST time this has EVER happened. (redundant I know)
But this is just too freaky! Always a Paypal notice
NEVER this. I didn't check any box indicating this,
but I'll try and check. I've suspected for sometime
that something was amiss. I was caught up in that
'keystroke' lockon here about 3 years ago and had to
start over with everything on my pc.
Most of us pretty much assume that our emails, etc
are hijacked; read, etc. But THIS??

But last night I was trying to activate my printer
and when I asked the pc to check for 'new hardware'
it brought up this: an exclamation mark in a logo
that said something like "shared network" or close
to this (I tried to copy it and ask someone about it
but it wouldn't c/p)

I don't know enough about this to findout HOW to get
rid of whatever it is. I would have to be walked
through it.

Not sure how to copy this unto thread without
giving up my email addy, but will try.

if you gave me your email address I could, right now, send you an email that looks like it came form you. Anybody can. But if you look deeper and at the email header you can see that it doesnt actually come from your email server.

It's an old hacker's trick -- spoofing the email and IP. I can do it, and so can anyone else with just a little bit of knowledge and a simple probe of unsecured computers.

The first time I encountered it was back in 1992 (which was when I learned to do this, using the old telnet command line protocols.) Spammers use it to make things seem like they come from legitimate links and legitimate websites. If you click, it often leads to kittens sites or sites that grab your info.

No need to panic. Delete the email and laugh.

Sorry to be so stupid about this, I initially
got into computers to research a project that I
have been working on for many years for a video
documentary and didn't take time to really learn
basics. Just leapt in there and hit and miss
at a frantic pace, but it certainly beat snail mail
and the wait. Or library data.

So many things going on NOW re EVERYTHING imagineable
and not, so I thank all that have taken time to help
me during this dilemma, which seems paltry compared
to what is happening all around us and in our private
lives. This in not how I expected to spend these past
hours either, but it just shocked the L out of me.

If you go "full header", you will see
a numbered URL after "Sender:". Usually
the first one is the telltale source.

Usually, it is from Africa, Russia or China.

Not to be over critical, but if you are not knowledgeable about computer security, do you really think you should do online transactions?

(I would imagine everyone on this thread are thinking
the same thing) I thought long and hard before I
did this and it is the ONLY online transaction I
have ever done-For this very reason.
I have been tempted to purchase a few things in the
past; non musical CD'S, etc.
But have resisted and generally
send a money order rather than even a check or
personal debit card.

I thought L only $7...not considering all implications.
Just a loose moment, I guess.
