Did they install some malware on your computer from an e-mail attachment or something? How did it happen exactly? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76971708 Tired to log into my coinbase pro account and probably mistyped the address. Got a message to call them and verify my account. I did and through the verification process I gave them access to my computer. Used gotoaassist.com. They did their thing to "link" my account to coinbase. By the time I realized it was probably (and it was) a scam and locked my account it was too late. It's painful and embarrassing, but I posting so no one else does what I did. Oh, coinbase support sucks. Standard message reply was that they would get back to me in a few days. It took two days to unlock my account so I worried for two days that my funds might be gone. Now, two days later, I no longer have to worry. Gone. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76971708 United States 05/28/2021 03:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks for sharing OP. I thought I would capture the lessons learned here... 1. Always bookmark your crypto related websites from a reputable source like coinmarket cap or something like this. (don't manually type URLs in) 2. Enable two factor authentication using an authenticator app on your mobile device. (SMS is not good enough). 3. Be suspicious of anything that asks for you to install something on your just to authenticate into a service, 99% of the time this will be a scam of some sort. 4. Of course be suspicious of any e-mail or related attachments (phishing attempts). Hope this helps prevent this from happening to someone else out there. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80407770 There are a lot of new and young folks investing in crypto. People have to realize in crypto you have to have some understanding of what you are doing. No only with the simple things like logging into a website, but also setting up a hew wallet, depositing/withdrawing, staking, etc. There a lot of pitfalls out there. Until crypto gets to a point where Grandma can do it, it will continue to have trouble with mainstream adoption. |

By the time I realized it was a scam and locked my account, the coins were transferred out. No response from Coinbase. Is there any recourse available? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76569441 I doubt there's anything that can be done. If you're trading considerable amounts of crypto you NEED to have a separate computer that is not used for ANYTHING else. No web browsing, no porn, no YouTube, NOTHING BUT ACCESS TO YOUR EXCHANGE ACCOUNTS. Then you create shortcuts on that desktop directly to your exchange(s). It's worth the extra $500 for a dedicated computer just for trading |

Probably one of these bro's did it [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] Bottomline man, your coins are long gone. I got that IRS call that one time...stupid me, i called the number back, but fortunately, the guys indian accent gave it away. But man, come on, if somebody asks you to install something on your computer, that's a red flag. On other news....i've told my mom who is almost 80....never ever give anybody your bank account info if they are calling you. If they call you to tell you that you need to pay, you call them back. Just two weekends ago, i go visit her, and she is on the phone and i hear her giving her bank account info...and i'm like, who are you talking to? And she says, amazon. And im like, since when have you ever ordered from amazon? Got on the phone with the indian asshole and told him that i was on my way to get the gift cards... But yea, geezus mom, only been telling you for 5 years never ever to give your info on the phone. |
