Can a hunting Dog be a pet too?

the hunters I know, probably love their dogs more than their wives.

ive never hunted dogs but i know for a fact that hunting dogs are good pets!
they listen well. as far as i know.

yes they make the best hunters by being close to you and you working with them they will understand what you want and work with you better than a dog that you have in a kennel or on a chain.

beagles hounds and other dogs with long floppy ear make great house dogs and are some of the best family dogs.

Labs are ok but probably not as good of a house dog.

Me and my boyfriend got a black lab and he gets all pissy when the dog cuddles with me and doesn’t listen, says he has to be obedient to him so he don’t jump in front of his gun.
Why can’t it be both? If he trained it right.

Had a couple of Walker hounds we trained as coon dogs. Good companions and loyal. They weren't much into cuddling, baby talking, or any of that other gay-assed shit.

hes righ. hunting dogs can be great pets. you may have to try harder here or there. now your womanly instincts can make that dog a great house pet but may push it to being a less useful hunting dog. sorry.

That’s fine i get it, but he expects me to feed and take care of the dog, if he wants a hunting dog and not a pet then he needs to take care of the fucking thing himself, I’m not a pyscopath I can’t help but love the dog and it ain’t my fault the dog wants to cuddle with me.

So how do I get rid of those instincts? What advice can you give me?

Raised, trained, and hunted behind bird dogs(quail, pheasant, etc) for many many years.

They made great pets, and performed better in the field than dogs who were relegated to pens, and only interacted with people when in the field.

I’m frustrated , obviously, I feel like I’m being used to take care of the dog when it suits him. He can’t have both. If he wants a hunting dog only he needs to man up and take care of the fucking thing.

Thanks, not sure how I can get this goof to see it can be both. He just needs to train it when he takes it out in the field and leave him be a pet when he is home.

you can probably find a happy medium. get him to do more with the dog by telling him that the dog will be far more obidiant to him if he is the one feeding and taking it out to poo. cuddle a little less with the dog. so it doesnt attach too much to you. one of my dogs will try to hold its poos for mom. she has to be walking funny before she will go out and go. the male doesn't care. so every dog is different about different things. they are just house pets. who get too much cuddling and act wierd sometimes about the me vs her and how they respond to commands.

Of course.

Dogs are loyal and loving.

Just be their friend. Treat them with respect and kindness and they will be your best friend you ever had. Treat them poorly and theres a special place in hell for you.

I did in fact tell him to start taking care of the dog himself, now all of a sudden the dog can be a pet too, I’m just not allowed to cuddle him. I call bullshit. Personally I think the boyfriend is acting like an asshat.

It’s the boyfriend will be going to hell not me.
