 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79911669

This stuff was posted on the previous page of this thread, but no one has answered.

The point is where are these types among the young people.

There are no Alanis Morissettes, Sheryl Crows, Fiona Apples, Jewels, or any of the other types of female icons from the 90s mentioned in this thread out there today.

The edge is gone. The spirit is gone.

Taylor Swift is a great song writer, but she's got no edge with her constant sappy, corny, repetitious love songs.

When Taylor Swift is edgy, it comes off as silly.

This is a very edgy idea for a song and video, but it comes off as a joke.

When you compare this to the examples of edginess from the 90s, I think the point of this thread is apparent.

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
I remember liking this song in the 90s. I could sing it by heart, but it barely registered for me. There was just so much great music that this was just another song. The thing is that I haven't heard a new pop song this good in a long time.

This is another song that has a distinct 90s sound and vibe. Nothing sounded like this in the 80s or before.

TLDR: This song is better than almost anything today, but it was an average radio song in the 90s.

Tori Amos

No mention of her in this thread, but she is a perfect example of what this thread is about. The spirit of the 90s. hf

The fact Tori Amos wasn't mentioned until the fourth page of this thread shows you what a worthy topic this is.

It's clear to me that not just with 90s female musicians but male musicians as well, everything fell off a cliff after the 90s.

I am starting to think everyone in the 90s was just tapping into the zeitgeist of the times rather than being so special themselves necessarily.

this was (the 90s) just before (anti)"social media", I-phones, before the internet really got going. The 90s were the last semi-normal decade. I was in my 30s at the time, so it wasn't when I was young.. I have never owned a cell phone, and limit my time on the internet significantly. I refuse to conform to 21st century "norms". I prefer the 1960s.. but 90s would suffice.

I love American music from the 60s to the 90s, but I like the 90s best because of the variety and diversity of the music. Entire musical genres peaked in the 90s that often didn't exist previously, but everything from those previous decades was still being recorded (with excellent quality) in the 90s. That's why the 90s are my top choice.

80s women were hotter, in shape bodies, tight yoga pants, leg warmers, huge teased hair. Natural, for the most part, and it made them the sexiest generation of all.

You mean, all the women that got a big tramp stamp on their lower back? Good, glad they are gone.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80291699

I was thinking about a tramp stamp earlier today and how glad I am to never have gotten one.
Yes, we are all in our 50's now and the women in their 20s all look the same to me now..lol.
Who has that much time to contour and why??
Sincerely,
Wife

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
I wouldn’t even know where to begin

For one thing females today are very outspoken & confident ... two qualities I don’t like in women & or young women

Almost every female I see has tattoos

Most of them dress like whores & they even dress young children the same way , I see girls younger than 12 dressed in shorts that couldn’t even get any shorter

The gym has just as many women members as men these days & they are training like men , they are also dressed in very revealing clothing to say the least , they are practically wearing bras & underwear in public

And there’s this

The W.A.P. challenge

WAP stands for wet a** (women’s private parts)

They even play this song at the gym I go to

Judgement day is close

Now...

Was the 60s spirit dead in 1991?

No way. So many of the 60s artists were still producing incredible music in the 90s. I would say plenty of 60s artists like Eric Clapton, Ozzy Osbourne, and Tina Turner didn't hit their peaks until the 90s.

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
This is spooky to me. I tried to think of a female artist who started in the 90s but became more successful later.

Beyoncé is one. However, I always felt like her music peaked in the 90s, and although she became more popular later, her music went downhill.

This song was released in 1999, and it's my favorite Beyoncé song.

This has the 90s vibe...like nothing before or since.

I think it's important to critically consider the past and how things have changed in order to put the present in context.

If I were to start this thread again, I would name it "The 90s spirit is extinct", but I only realized that by considering this topic more closely.

This is a great nostalgia thread, I came of age in the 90’s, started high school in 93’ it most certainly was a magical time, I don’t really know what it was but there was definitely something in the air. So much great music was made, nothing since then even comes close. Getting real melancholy thinking about my wasted youth in a by gone era and how awesome everything was then.
Out from the belly of a whale came a prophet, Amen!

Bjork - the one, the only - can't say she was a 90s woman when she's been so consistent from the 80s to today.

However, her music peaked in the 90s.

This thread is only scratching the surface of the highlights. You would have to break it down year by year in every genre for both women and men to do it justice.

If that were done, I think it would be undeniable that the 90s was the peak for music, and I would say all of human civilization.
