The concept of being feminine and beautiful (and not artificial) started to go away at the end of the 80s.

In the 90s, for every artificial-type iconic woman like Mariah Carey, you had a down-to-earth iconic woman like Alanis Morissette. Consequently, I believe the 90s were a lot less artificial than the 80s. Every iconic woman in the 80s I can think of was on the artificial side.
