I think that is another thing that was new and different about the 90s. Being yourself was not just acceptable. It was cool. For instance, I don't think this woman was fashionable at all, but everyone just seemed to think being yourself was intrinsically cool. As if being yourself was an important statement in itself. As if being yourself was an important statement in itself. Somebody mentioned "lazy bum style" as a derogatory thing concerning the 90s earlier in this thread, and some would say the woman in this music video looks that way. My point of view as someone who grew up in that time is that it wasn't about making being a "lazy bum" stylish. It was about the recognition of any kind of self-expression being stylish. I think that was another new thing in the 90s. In other words, being yourself was inherently stylish. How beautiful. I don't see how anyone could consider that negative? I still remember how I felt about this music video when it was popular in the 90s. I thought these women had a bizarre fashion sense, but it was cool that they were so bold and confident that they were not embarrassed to express themselves however they wanted. I thought they looked hideous, but I thought it was great that self-expression was considered inherently cool. Again, I think that was a new thing in the 90s. [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] |

Have women from then until now, Highschool, University, work, bars. Trust me, nobody shaved until literally 1999. Do not miss.... i bet you're obsessed with the crotch area.. degenerate perv |

Things had been slowly degrading in the late 90’s like 98’ and onward but when 911 happened you could feel the whole “mood” change and it was for the worse. I just don't understand why. People have said similar things about JFK's assassination, and I think the Vietnam war was far worse than 9/11. America thrived after so many horrible things like the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Great Depression, World War 1, and World War 2, but 9/11 did us in. That makes no sense in the big picture. |

If you want boring but stable, then the women of the 1800s and before are probably your dream. Since I prefer interesting, challenging, exciting women, things seemed to get good in the 1920s in my view. Everyone has their own preferences, and there no absolutes in romance. |

I did not see that coming! As for 90s babes being extinct, we’re still around! We’re just 40 and 50 years old. We’re moms, grandma’s and cool aunts. You’re looking for us in younger generations. They aren’t us and never will be. Newer generations have been ruined by the media and education system brainwashing them. They have filler in their faces, plastic surgery lips and noses, and o.f. accounts. Personality has never mattered for them, only influence. Their idols got famous from making sex tapes. They never even had a chance. IDGAF |

I thought they were the epitome of beauty, class and femininity. In the 90s is when I noticed that the whole androgenous ( for women), political correct bs really gained steam and ruined the traditional family. In the 80's it was still a thing. |

Personality has never mattered for them, only influence. Their idols got famous from making sex tapes. They never even had a chance. That's very true and eloquently put. It's hard to understand how and why the musicians of the 90s (both men and women) have lost the ability to create good music anymore. It just doesn't make sense when you look back at history, and how this stuff has gone in the past. This thread has made me believe there was a special spirit in the 90s that was pervasive and blessed us all, and that spirit left humanity soon after the 90s. And it wasn't that the people of the 90s were so special, but the spirit was that special. |

With that said, I think it was the peak of human civilization. We had the greatest technology and culture before the Internet degraded and ruined everything. I can see making a case for earlier time periods being better, but I don't see anything beating the 1990s. If you do, please explain. The 90's were Great! but I think the 80's were even better |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27981240 I see it exactly the opposite. I see the 80s as mostly being very superficial for women in music as they all seemed to need that caked on makeup look as you can see here: [link to www.liveabout.com (secure)] I know that style still continued in the 90s, but plenty of women in the 90s refused that clone-like style, and they were completely dedicated to doing their own things. I just see the 90s as being more about self-expression and the admiration and respect of that way more than people in the 80s could have dreamed to be. I see the 80s as the "greed is good" decade with Madonna glorifying being a material girl. I see the 90s as being just like this video. Every young person at that time was like the protagonist in the movie Clueless. We were all philosophers. We were all different. We all respected the right of each other to be philosophers. I think you had to be of this exact age group (high school age in the 90s) to get it. To sum up, the 80s were too materialistic for me, but the 90s were the age of personal philosophy which I am all about and therefore prefer. [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] |
