90s?

Oh, you whippersnappers!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80204567

My prime was in the 90s, so I have an affinity for that time.

With that said, I think it was the peak of human civilization. We had the greatest technology and culture before the Internet degraded and ruined everything.

I can see making a case for earlier time periods being better, but I don't see anything beating the 1990s. If you do, please explain.

lol ok i'll take ya up on that.. my prime was the 80's, and this song '80's ladies' explains it better than I can..

Quoting that song:

We were the girls of the 50's.
Stoned rock and rollers in the 60's.
And more than our names got changed
As the 70's slipped on by.
Now we're 80's ladies.

The women described in that song were in their teens in the 60s. I was in my teens to my mid-20s in the 90s, and I'm calling that my prime.

Those women were in their thirties to fourties in the 80s, and you're saying that was their prime.

I am not saying you are wrong, but we aren't speaking the same language here.

Those were women of the 60s calling themselves 80s women. That makes no sense to me. They should have been proud to be 60s women and left it at that.

I don't understand the motives there. I think they were living a lie claiming to be 80s women.

ahhh ok, i see what you're saying..

following along with the lady singing the song.. for example.. i was born mid 50's.. a girl of the 50's. so in the 60's, i wasn't exactly a stoned rock and roller, altho maybe some others were. O.o but during the 70s, i graduated high school, and (women's lib, burned my bra lol) as a female joined the military during vietnam war, then later on got married (changed my name).. and in the mid 80's was 30 with three tiny sons.. and by that time, was in my prime, as she was in hers.

i suppose we could be looking at 'our prime' as different points in life. lol

If I was going to define what it means to belong to a certain decade, I would say a person still had to be in high school for at least one year during that decade. How would you define that?

My rationale is that you had to come out of adolescence in a certain time to understand what young people were really going through at the time, and that's the only way to truly understand what it means to belong to a decade.

i agree with that.

and i'm fairly sure folks know which decades they relate to the best, and why.

looking back on my life, i can see that in many ways physically i was 'at my best' in my 20's. yet in my 30's and even early 40's i 'felt' more secure, confident, successful in who i was as a person. so yep, i see those as my 'prime' years. in my 20's, i was stupidly naive, so IMO, that doesn't count as prime years.. again.. in my own opinion, for myself. lol.

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
I see the 90s as being just like this video. Every young person at that time was like the protagonist in the movie Clueless. We were all philosophers. We were all different. We all respected the right of each other to be philosophers. I think you had to be of this exact age group (high school age in the 90s) to get it.

To sum up, the 80s were too materialistic for me, but the 90s were the age of personal philosophy which I am all about and therefore prefer.

I think this is a good description of what it meant to be a 90s woman (and man). I think it was about personal philosophy and self-expression most. I think that's apparent in the songs posted throughout this thread.

I think it's also apparent in the most beloved song from the 90s. It just occurred to me that Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" isn't a Christmas song at all. It's a song about Carey's personal philosophy about Christmas and the importance of Christmas in her life.

It's a philosophical statement (like most of the songs posted in this thread) and not a Christmas song.

In my life, I experienced the bliss of growing up in the 90s, and I was at my peak then because I was heavily influenced by my environment. The environment of the 90s lifted me to my peak.

Society started to crumble metaphorically after 9/11, and it just continues to go downhill. I fell off a little along with the decline of my environment after 9/11.

Ace of Base's "The Sign" was a great example of the 90s spirit.

I realize philosophical radio songs by hot women wasn't a new thing in the 90s, but this song checked all the boxes perfectly. It sounded futuristic at the time. It still sounds modern today.

1990's were definitely better than anything after.
But the 1950's-1980's were better.
But I'd take even the Great Depression/Dust Bowl/World War 2 days of the 1930's and first half of the 1940's any day over anything from 9/11/2001 onwards, and especially over 2020 or 2021.

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
The Donnas are probably the most perfect example of 90s women in music in terms of timing. They were all born in 1979 which means they attended the entirety of middle school and high school in the 90s.

They released three albums in the 90s all on very minor labels. That's important because we know it wasn't big business or the Illuminati behind them. They were as organic as you can get.

Do they epitomize the 90s spirit that this thread about?

Yes. This song from their second album released in 1998 is all about personal philosophy, expression, and freedom.

I am qualified to discuss this because I attended middle school in the 80s and high school in the 90s. The 80s was the yuppie decade. It was not better than the 90s at all.

Another thing about it is the shameless audacity of saying something so ridiculous but expecting people to take you seriously. And a big reason why that was even possible back then is because there was so much respect for individuality and the right for everyone to have their own personal philosophy.

There was a synergy throughout American society in the 90s that was magical.

Now I see why I love The Donnas so much. They kept the 90s spirit alive into the 2010s which we are seeing in this thread is incredibly rare.

This song by them from 2004 is my favorite song by an all-woman band. I didn't realize it before, but it's so 90s. A perfect example.

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
"Everyday Is a Winding Road" by Sheryl Crow is a completely philosophical song. I never really thought about the meaning of it, but in the context of this thread it's becoming more apparent.

[Pre-Chorus]
Jump in, let's go
Lay back, enjoy the show
Everybody gets high, everybody gets low
These are the days when anything goes

[Chorus]
Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer to feeling fine

In my humble opinion...

Those lyrics are a good description of the magic of the 90s and what it was all about. Everyone was full of hope, and there was so much respect for individuality that "These are the days when anything goes" rang true.

"Everybody gets high, everybody gets low" meant that the special pervasive consciousness of the time was everywhere, and no one could escape it. "Everyday is a winding road" meant everything was an adventure.

"Everyday is a faded sign" meant that it all felt like a dream.

I think 80s music holds better than 90s. That said I liked the alternative vibes of the time before the pink/blue hair era came. I remember when Molly Ringwald wore almost goth-like make up in a movie from 1995 called Malicious. It now seems as if the 90s had their own versions of the film noir femme fatale types from the 1940s!

The early to mod 90s were better - the cars, women, people in general. It all hit the fan with cars that got too ovoid and the likes of Britney in the late 90s.

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
Most women after the 90’s grew up in homes without a father there. It was the beginning of the single mom era. A womans first male relationship is with her bio dad. Women were taught a father was not necessary. So now all these women have daddy issues. They don’t respect themselves. Thats one of the things you learn from Dad, self respect. They trash themselves then wonder why men hit and go.
