I think 80s music holds better than 90s.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72411634

I kind of agree. My favorite genre of music right now is 80s remixes of contemporary songs.

I like the 90s best of any decade of music because of the variety and diversity of the music. Entire musical genres peaked in the 90s that often didn't exist previously, but everything from those previous decades was still being recorded (with excellent quality) in the 90s.

90's woman where full of hell
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78080315

I think that was less of a problem than with any other women in modern times (1960s or after).

Why?

Women of the 1990s wanted everyone to know exactly what they wanted and how they felt truthfully. There are examples of that in songs posted throughout this thread, but there are too many to post.

Peter Steele might have been peak performance back in the 90's for the opposite sex. Lots of goth groupies back then.

Does anyone actually think this 80s style Madonna "material girl" is better?

If so, please explain.

"This Used To Be My Playground" song was released on June 16, 1992. That's less on eight years after "Material Girl" which was released on November 30, 1984. Madonna became so much more mature in such a short time.

The 90s even turned Madonna into a deep, introspective philosopher. I realize now that it wasn't just fashionable to be philosophical in the 90s. There was a force pushing everyone that way.

I can totally see how you felt that way about Gwen Stefani. I felt the same way about her at the time.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78989490

Gwen Stefani was a dead ringer for Alicia Silverstone in the early 90s as you can see here. It was really a golden era of attractive women. Imagine thinking a woman like this was just a little above average. I can't believe I was lucky enough to live through that.

Now I see what the cartoon TV show Daria was about:

[link to en.m.wikipedia.org (secure)]

The series ran from March 3, 1997 to January 21, 2002 on MTV. It was probably the best cartoon TV show of the 90s.

It carried through the 90s spirit perfectly. It was all about personal philosophy, self-expression, and standing for personal freedom.

This music video was released in 1992. It looks and sounds so modern.

It's another major philosophical statement that is great music. More incredible looking women epitomizing the 90s spirit.

What was pushing every musician to be philosophical in the 90s?

Don't read the comments to that video unless you don't mind ruining your day. There's some really sad stuff there.

I think 80s Madonna vs. 90s Madonna is a good way to sum up the main difference between the decades.

80s Madonna was a yuppie. 90s Madonna was a philosopher.

I am still waiting for a good answer on why people prefer the 80s and 80s women over the 90s and 90s women.

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
Avril Lavigne started out as a professional musician in the 90s although she didn't release an album until 2002. It's not surprising that her debut album had some 90s influence.

I think there were several songs on her debut album that were pure 90s.

Like this song. It's probably the best fusion of heavy metal, grunge, and pop that I have ever heard. It would have fit in perfectly in the 90s. A true masterpiece.

It was also a real anomaly because she never recorded anything like it again. It's another example of how hard it was to keep the 90s spirit alive after the 90s.

Shakira released albums throughout the 90s, but I don't know anything about that music because it was not recorded in English.

In 2001, she released her first single that was recorded in English. Guess what? It's another great personal philosophy song sung by an amazingly attractive woman.

This thread has made me look at the 90s completely differently. I realized what was happening at the time, but I didn't realize how special it was because the extraordinary (by today's standards) seemed normal.

Re: 90s-type women now extinct
Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine" isn't a love song. It's a song about her personal philosophy of romance.

Who could possibly construe this song as a love song? Twain is like a drill sergeant barking out orders on how things have to be. And her man could only possibly answer, "Mam. Yes, mam." chuckle

...or he's not her man anymore. It's more like armed robbery than romance.

Nonetheless, this song and this woman check all the boxes on the spirit of the 90s. Total hottie too of course.

Everything was so philosophical in 90s music, but when did it start?

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - What I Am

Released November 1988

This song was the protype of the 90s music we're discussing in my view. All the elements we're discussing in this thread are there. I want to know when all this started.

I think this wasn't a 90s-type female philosophical song because as we can see in song after song in this thread, 90s women were very literal and specific, and this song is metaphorical and vague. This song was headed toward the 90s style but not there yet.

I found an 80s song that I think meets all the criteria we're discussing in this thread.

"Express Yourself" by Madonna

Released on May 9, 1989

We're talking about a matter of months before the 90s, and the style just arrived.

What is missing in terms of the topic of this thread which is "90s-type women"?

It's a philosophical statement expressed in literal, specific, unambiguous terms. Madonna was supremely confident about the message, and it had a 90s sound and music video.

"Express Yourself" is not a love song. It's a philosophical statement. It's definitely pop music, but even most of the alternative songs posted in this thread were pop songs.

One thing that was so great about the 90s was that it didn't really matter what you're philosophy was as long as you had one, and you really believed in it. Madonna was singing from the heart with "Express Yourself", so it meets that criteria too.

Many men in the 90s were junkies and attracted to women with prepubescent boy bodies.

Alanis was called fat for her music video “Thank You”. There was so much pressure to be super thin in the 90s many women went without menstruating for many years

Great music from that decade. Not mad about it

I found it. This song was released on January 8, 1990.

This song announced the arrival of the 90s. It announced the arrival of everything we're discussing in this thread.

I remember thinking that when I listened to this song back then. "This is the sound and style of the 90s" was what I thought.

I believe the fact it was released a few days into the 90s was no coincidence.

We are suffering from the technology overdrive. It sapped our creative spirits badly because we can just get the next short term dopamine fix from YouTube, Twitter or from whatever. We are hooked on that short term drug.

Those born after 2000 are especially badly addicted and it is stunting their mental growth. Messing up their young brains very very destructively.

We are like bitchy demanding adult toddlers with pacifiers on all the time everywhere, thanks to our smartphones and computers.

The most popular American movies are nothing but remakes of super heroes of this and that. The Marvel universe is scraping at the bottom of barrel. Or furiously driving shitty car movies.

The creativity drive stopped around 2010 in the US. No iconic movies or even catchy songs ever since. Just dull and boring crap.

I can remember at least three posters who agreed in this thread that the way Gwen Stefani looked in the mid-90s wasn't very special. You can take that first-hand testimony or leave it.

However, if that's true, and I agree, then the fact is that there were women like that everywhere in America back then. I grew up in Southern California, so I can only speak for that.

You can find videos like this of the 90s online. Daisy Fuentes was off the charts, but the rest of these women are about what I would say was typical back then. Are they rght with someone like Juliana Hatfield or Gwen Stefani back then? No doubt (pun intended).
