I found an 80s song that I think meets all the criteria we're discussing in this thread. "Express Yourself" by Madonna Released on May 9, 1989 We're talking about a matter of months before the 90s, and the style just arrived. It's a philosophical statement expressed in literal, specific, unambiguous terms. Madonna was supremely confident about the message, and it had a 90s sound and music video. "Express Yourself" is not a love song. It's a philosophical statement. It's definitely pop music, but even most of the alternative songs posted in this thread were pop songs. One thing that was so great about the 90s was that it didn't really matter what you're philosophy was as long as you had one, and you really believed in it. Madonna was singing from the heart with "Express Yourself", so it meets that criteria too.
