We also have Gwen Stefani's completely unique fashion at that time. In the comments to that video, people are saying Stefani was wearing 1940s clothing there. Regardless of the specifics, she was different than else in pop music at the time, and she didn't care. She was going to express herself her way regardless of what anyone thought. Pop stars are like clones today in terms of fashion.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80471199 This point is baffling to me. Why don't contemporary musicians wear clothing from past eras? I guess it's not hip anymore. It wasn't hip in the 90s to wear what's apparently 1940s style clothing like Stefani, but that gets back to a major issue of this thread: In the 90s, being yourself was hip in itself. Self-expression was cool. It wasn't that the fashion you were wearing was cool. It was that your self-expression made you cool regardless of what you were expressing (within reason). I think that was a unique thing in the 90s, and it disappeared afterward.
