Daisy Fuentes who was one of the hottest women in America back then is shamelessly flirting with this guy in a very suggestive way on national TV. There it is on video. That's what so many men say about how things were better back then. There was no shame for even the hottest women to instigate romance in a mature way. And they did it a lot. Because it was seen as two equals sparring for fun regardless of how serious the intentions were. You can see it in that video. So much has been lost. I am so glad I am beyond this stuff, but I feel terrible for the younger generations. |

If it were the same situation between people that good-looking today, Daisy Fuentes isn't going to lower herself to flirting when she can get endless dates online without any effort. Back then, even the most attractive people had to flirt to get the dates they wanted. And then you can see by the man's reaction in that video that he thought she was out of his league. If that situation happened today, the female would instigate nothing because of her dating app. The guy would continue to think she was out of his league forever. Nothing would ever happen between, and it's such a shame because they look so happy together. Welcome to modern life. |

I think flirting with strangers is degrading. I never do it because I think it is classless, but these days it is dangerous with hypersensitive SJWs out there. I think women are lucky that they don't have to flirt anymore. I just think it has disadvantages just like with this video we're discussing. Probably every sane man in America thought Daisy Fuentes was out of his league. She probably had no choice but to send clear signals, or she would have possibly been alone. In the age of dating apps and the mentality that comes with them, I think that type of danger is greater than ever. Normal human interaction is disappearing. Maybe 90s-type women are extinct? |

I am so glad I am beyond this stuff, but I feel terrible for the younger generations. There's a whole other level to this that just occurred to me. Back then, since the woman had to put out an effort to get the dates she wanted, she wanted the guy to succeed because getting another date would take significant work. It was kind of like a company that hires new employees. They do whatever they can to help the employees succeed because finding replacements isn't cheap or efficient. It's not like that anymore for attractive women who use dates sites and apps. With just swiping right or left, they have nothing invested in getting dates. Finding new guys is as easy as picking up their phones. Consequently, dates become disposable trash to attractive women. I don't see how the birth rates and marriage rates haven't fallen off a cliff in that environment. |

It might be impossible for young people today to believe, but the types of women like these pop stars were around everywhere in Southern California in the 90s. I can't speak for anywhere else. I worked in a huge warehouse as a teen, and many of the women who were my colleagues were approximately as beautiful as these pop stars. The company I worked for hired lots of college students, and this thread is representative of how lots of those women were back then even at my menial job. I know that will seem outrageous to many, but I think I could prove it with photos and videos of that time. |

Puhlease Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64126148 That song is epic poetry. Picking apart the hopeful, brooding ruminations of the jangle-pop masterstroke could take hours because Hatfield, once and always a mystery, never had a sister. When Hatfield is calling her sister “such a bitch” or “the best,” she’s drawing from an amalgam of ideas — some real, like her friend who took her to her first all-ages show (the Violent Femmes and the “Del Foo-way-goes”), and some personal, such as wondering how others saw her. Ultimately, “My Sister” became a sensation anyway: A spot in MTV’s coveted Buzz Bin, a No. 1 Modern Rock single, and the cover of SPIN’s March 1994 issue. It was so popular, in fact, that Hatfield’s label, Atlantic, allowed another of its artists, folk singer Melissa Ferrick, to release a track titled “The Juliana Hatfield Song (Girls With Guitars)” that complained about its title character’s success. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64126148 That's a worthy topic. The decline in male music has been even worse than the decline in female music in my opinion. For example, Ariana Grande today is at least somewhat comparable to Mariah Carey in the 90s. Taylor Swift today is comparable to Madonna in the 90s. If you look at the male musicians on this list: [link to spinditty.com (secure)] I can't think of any contemporary male musicians who are comparable to the top male musicians of the 90s or previously at all. |

Second, they didn't always dance in concert, and even if they did, it's not relevant. Third, their music improved. I think this song and video by them a couple of years after that concert is perfect. It's a perfect example of how everything back then is extinct among young people today. No Doubt was proud to be a garage band. They were one of the biggest bands in the world at the time of that music video, and they were performing in an actual garage in that video. Pop stars today are the opposite of that. They just want to make an ostentatious display of their success as much as possible. We also have Gwen Stefani's completely unique fashion at that time. In the comments to that video, people are saying Stefani was wearing 1940s clothing there. Regardless of the specifics, she was different than else in pop music at the time, and she didn't care. She was going to express herself her way regardless of what anyone thought. Pop stars are like clones today in terms of fashion. Another important point is that the band wrote the song "Sunday Morning" by themselves. I don't remember the last time I saw a big pop act with a song they wrote themselves without an outside songwriter co-writing or completely writing the song. |

Why don't contemporary musicians wear clothing from past eras? I guess it's not hip anymore. It wasn't hip in the 90s to wear what's apparently 1940s style clothing like Stefani, but that gets back to a major issue of this thread: In the 90s, being yourself was hip in itself. Self-expression was cool. It wasn't that the fashion you were wearing was cool. It was that your self-expression made you cool regardless of what you were expressing (within reason). I think that was a unique thing in the 90s, and it disappeared afterward. |

Gee, what would I, a woman throughout these time periods know about women then and now and how 'spirit and values' change? Example - I HAD spirit and values when I adored her and her music as a child having fun dancing and singing, then you grow up and see the world for the pack of lies and garbage that it really is.
