We generally get one or two, but a wet spring generates more food for the mice which generates a rodent population explosion which in turn give us a few more cases. Normal times. Nothing new. |

I don't worry about Hanta but there are a dozen other rodent born diseases that could be altered into antibiotic resistant super strains. Last Edited by Doctor Congo on 06/08/2021 02:18 PM |

Just not common since it is only passed animal to human. It IS the kind that mad scientists have likely tinkered with in a bioweapons lab already to make it human-human transmissible. If they ever let that one out, I'll wear a mask. Last Edited by Augmentalist on 06/08/2021 12:56 PM Augmented by Grace |

Same virus, same transmissions, however completely different symptoms. The US version is by far the worst. Your capillaries on your lungs “leak” resulting in patients basically drowning on their blood and the heart being unable to work. It is a horrible disease but typically only found in the southwest, aside from a few random outbreaks in the north. Although the deer mouse it is found in is spread throughout the entirety of the USA. They say that once the patient makes it to stage two which is the capillaries leaking, they have a 50 percent chance of survival. ALWAYS wear respiratory gear when cleaning sheds, it doesn’t take much to aerosolize the mouse feces or urine. Here is an interactive outbreak mapping for the US by year for any that are interested. And if you want to learn more check out “this podcast will kill you” and the episode on hantavirus. It’s a bit layman for the less nerdy, but I prefer TWIV “this week in virus” that has an epidemiologist and virologist speaking on a number of viruses. VERY DRY! One of the scariest out there aside from Ebola. The Ebola outbreak in the 80s was frightening because it was airborne from human to human, however nobody had symptoms. I find that fascinating. I believe it was a research center using monkeys from the Philippines. Meanwhile while that was happening the same species monkeys were being decimated by Ebola over there with mass die offs. Viruses are scary, but hemorrhagic fever viruses are terrifying. “When you’re dead you’re dead, but you’re not quite so dead if you contribute something” -John Dunsworth |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 80297003 United States 06/08/2021 02:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Michigan health officials have announced the state’s first confirmed case of a human infection by the rodent-borne hantavirus, which causes a potentially deadly pulmonary illness with symptoms similar to COVID-19. Quoting: Save America From Politicians The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) confirmed in a release that an adult female in Washtenaw County was recently hospitalized with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), which is caused by the Sin Nombre hantavirus. Officials believe the woman, who was not identified in the release, became exposed to the virus when cleaning a residence that appeared to be infested by rodents. HPS, which is rare but deadly, has a fatality rate of around 40 percent. No cases of human-to-human transmission of hantavirus have been reported, with humans at risk of infection when dried materials contaminated by rodent excreta become disturbed and then either get inhaled, enter breaks in the skin, or are ingested through tainted food and water. While bites from infected rodents can also transmit the virus, the highest risk of human infection occurs when entering or cleaning rodent-infested structures.
