User ID: 76388104 United States 06/08/2021 11:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This baby bird was discovered on the neighbor carport. Quoting: President-Elect Watdhel A chicken snake was trying to get it & it & it's mom, who has now disappeared, was raising enough hell the neighbors heard it. It can hop around ok but it can't fly. I tried to feed it pieces of a worm but it wasn't interested. Anyone have any ideas on getting it to eat & what to feed it? Thanks in advance! Can someone place it back in its nest? |

Quoting: Urban_Moving_Systems That's an old wives tale! If the baby bird is sparsely feathered and not capable of hopping, walking, flitting, or gripping tightly to your finger, it’s a nestling. If so, the nest is almost certainly nearby. If you can find the nest (it may be well hidden), put the bird back as quickly as possible. Don’t worry—parent birds do not recognize their young by smell. They will not abandon a baby if it has been touched by humans. If the nest has been destroyed you can make a new one, place the chick back inside and watch to see if the parents come back. We have no idea where it came from. Since the snake was trying to get it, it probably hopped out of the nest to escape it. There's lots of really tall tree's around, so finding & getting it back in the nest would be difficult. We killed the chicken snake tho! |

You can cook and cool Quaker Oats or a grain. Or wet tiny pieces of bread. You have to hold the food above the bird like the mother does. The baby reaches up to get it. A baby bird has no idea how to eat off the ground or from a dish. Last Edited by nutmeg on 06/09/2021 12:00 AM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80122730 United States 06/09/2021 12:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I didn't know any better, and took in a baby bird that fell from a high tree. Picked it up carefully, put it in a shoebox with high sides, lined with a towel, carried the box inside my apt, and put the box in my bathroom, (cuz I have a cat). Put small holes in the lid of the box for air and covered the box. After reading online... It wasn't a tiny bird, and it said don't feed it, because it's likely in distress and it won't starve overnight. Next morning I called the wildlife rescue in our area, they came right out and took the baby bird. Can also call fish and games dept, animal control, or a veterinarian for referrals for rehabbers that will come out and take the bird in. |

Raw liver (no seasoning) Hard-boiled eggs. Dog biscuits (moistened) Dog or cat kibble (moistened) [link to www.thespruce.com (secure)] I was wrong about bread: What NOT to feed baby birds Water Bread or bread products Whole birdseed Milk Pet bird food Worms Kitchen scraps Tips for Feeding Baby Wild Birds If it is necessary for you to feed a baby bird, remember: Offer food that is spongy in texture, not dripping with water that could cause choking or drowning. All dry food should be softened before being offered to a baby bird. Food should be offered at room temperature only, never warmed or heated, and also never refrigerated or chilled. Keep bits of food small and in proportion to the bird's size; very small birds need very tiny bites. Cut or crush food appropriately to suit the bird's size. While feeding the bird, handle it as little as possible to minimize the risk of additional stress or injury. Never force the bird's bill open to eat. Last Edited by nutmeg on 06/09/2021 12:05 AM |

Jays, ravens and crows eat meat dog food Most all the rest like the grain baby cereal, its just in those insta dissolve flakes that are like oatmeal and turn to glue everywhere you dont wash off. If no next, put a basket or some other makeshift nest in the area and place the bird in it. Mama bird will come back to him. 3. MAKE SURE MAMA BIRD COMES BACK! If she doesn't come get him, look for your local wildlife rescue and they will nurse him back to health. Goodbye, halcyon days... (OP) User ID: 78495995 United States 06/09/2021 01:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Birdie seems to be resting comfortably in the "old" bird nest on my carport. It didn't seem very interested in the mashed up dog food w/ honey mixed in(that I think dog food is corn based) but I took a tooth pick & kinda rubbed some on it's beak. It did appear to eat a tiny bit of it, but just seemed really freaked out & confused. The birdie eye's are fully open & I left a bit of the mash stuff in a bottle cap. My hopes are Mommy bird will find it or another bird adopt & feed it, until that happens I'll do my best to keep Birdie feed & comfortable. Thanks everyone for the tips! |
