Is the air force the best accommodations of service? Also the most hated by other service? Or is that still reserved for the navy ?

Re: How long have you being in the military?
We were married 4 months before my husband got his draft notice at the age of 25. He had a great job with a major automobile company. He saw the stress there...guys having heart attacks in their 40's.

He could have spent 2-3 years in the army, and left, to return to his old job, but decided to stay in the army. He spent 24 years as army officer. I was the officer's wife.

It was tough back then...LOTS of moves. No internet when he was gone for years where the kids and I couldn't join him. No phone calls...they were too expensive. We did spend 3 years stationed in Germany. Traveled all over Europe.

NOW...the military provides free phone calls to the states if you're overseas. They don't move you as much. You have computers with Skype or zoom.

You get a paycheck every two weeks. Free healthcare. Pension when you retire.

I think it's great career for someone if you are an officer or are smart enough to move up in the ranks!

Oh...and remember 20% of the military see combat. 80% do not. There are some members who spend their entire career in entertainment groups or sitting in an office.

Now, as far as I know, they do not move you as much as they did back in those days. I say if a guy has a choice, the air force is the way to go. Learn a skill while in. Jet mechanic? Retire and get a job with a major airline. So many options.

A neighbor's son joined the Marines. They're sending him to college for free. It's a good deal.

So, military men...how fucked are we?
"Why did you have to go and make things so complicated?" -Avirl

Keep It Simple, Stupid.

The answer is easy once you know the question... But first, the correct question is very difficult to discover.
...For the answer is singular, but questions themselves are multitude.

Re: How long have you being in the military?
I'm in Sweden. We have a conscript army here, so EVERYONE must do time crawling in the mud for the motherland. We get a letter telling us to show up for medical exams and aptitude testing, and it's jail time if you don't show up. Some people don't want to do it for <insert reason here> and if they stand up for their non-existing right to refuse they will simply enter a cycle of

1. Get a letter telling you to show up for medical exams
2. Refuse
3. Go to jail
4. GOTO step 1

There's no exit from this loop other than giving up and doing what they tell you. Some really stubborn people have spent half their life in jail, just because they won't jump when the government tells them to jump. Or rather to crawl around in the mud for a few months, but you get the point.

I was an anarchist when I got my "invitation" though. I had a variety of youthful ideas in my head that made obeying the government out of the question, but I didn't much enjoy the idea of going to jail for it.

So I showed up at the exams and deliberately did my absolute worst in the testing, plus acting like I had psychological issues, faking being unable to pee when other watch and generally role-playing the most pathetic little soy boy I could imagine.

The idea was to give them the idea I'm not soldier material, so they wouldn't want me around.

It worked!
5a

Do I regret it?

Sort of. Some basic military training wouldn't have harmed me. But then there's the fact the government can call upon conscripts to do whatever it pleases at any time, and I like this prospect even less than my old anarchist self.
