Indeed. My first issue in this process is that my state government was forcing a citizen to contract with a private company to receive gov/public services.

Then, the secondary issue was being forced to contract with a private company who required me to not only disclose but to grant ownership and usage rights to all my confidental and private data (per TOS) as well as agree to all Google Inc TOS.

It took me over a month working with my State Senator's office and great determination refusing to allow my rights to be violated, laws violated and to reach an agreeable workaround.

These ID.me people staff out of India. That's where our confidential data are held or, at minimum, they have access...and, the company doesn't even have a customer service number.

Corporatocracy. The building of the next Google through government contracts.

The justification: gov claiming they cannot verify citizen ID with the very identification instruments issued by our gov.

"Fraud! Fraud!" The next boogeyman. Be fearful of fraud and hand your confidential docs to a for profit, private tech company because they will save the day!

You know the claimed identification issue by the gov agency is complete horseshit when you offer to visit their physical offices with your certified docs for an in person meeting and verification, and they refuse. Uh huh.
