I am an American white boy who lived in Taiwan and Hong Kong for several years.

In that part of the world, tanned / dark skin is associated with those who work
outdoors.. Field workers. Laborers. The perceived lower rungs on the societal ladder.

Outward physical beauty is, in part, gauged on how the lightness of one's skin.
