The season isn’t over, the neighborhood wasn’t sprayed, that I know of but they are gone in my whole area.

Omgosh! Surely they didn’t spray. It’s so weird, as far as you can see, there are none.

I go to the lake a lot at night-time. I play my music boxes really, really loud. Like 130 decibals loud. I make the fireflys show in fields every week. I just did a few days ago. They light up to the beats.

Yes, haven't seen any since. They should last to the end of summer, very odd.

A rural area? So they weren't sprayed? It was so weird, I've seen them congregate near the ground before but they always rise when it gets darker. These just stayed about a foot above ground all night. The next night a handful were in the grass, now there are no more. The fellas wouldn't believe me. I said "just go out, it's not even July yet! they're all gone!" Ima go for a drive tonight out of town and see if it's an isolated thing. It's so weird not seeing lightning bugs at night in the summer.

Was seeing them here in Pa until last night when it got down right chilly overnight! Tonight it is supposed to go down to the mid 40's...wtf In the middle of June? I suspect it is weather related in my area, not sure what temps have been in your area though!

Don't know about fireflies, but there's a strange illness affecting birds in the DC area.

[link to www.washingtonpost.com (secure)]

Birds are going blind in the Washington region, and wildlife experts don’t know why

There, she learned that the bird was a fledgling grackle and that it probably had some sort of neurological illness that had left it blind.

“We can’t do anything for it, but we can put it out of its misery,” Dimsdale said a staff member told her.

What that staff member said next left her concerned for more than that young grackle: They had seen other birds with the same symptoms.

Dimsdale had started that day stepping outside her home and ended up walking into a mystery. Wildlife experts say that an unusual number of blind birds have been found dead or dying in the Washington region lately, and they don’t know why.

“Eye issues were reported in what otherwise looked like healthy juvenile birds, causing blindness and the birds to land and stay on the ground,” the announcement says. “Animal Control is now seeing additional species of birds affected. Other agencies and localities across the region and state are reporting similar issues at this time.”

Online, some people had theorized that residents who were spraying cicadas with pesticides may be causing the problem.

Last night there were fireflies. I checked and they live in their lighted stage for a couple of months. Idk if they were new ones or not but I saw maybe about 10. All is not lost.

So we had tons of them a month ago. Now none. They seemed bigger and brighter this year, I’m rural off of a big lake. I don’t use pesticides and my rural community would never spray.

I had a neighbor mention the fireflies a few weeks ago, she wondered if the bats had gotten them all.
