Ketamine in the hospital story
Last night, my daughter suffered an awful broken elbow.

It caused a stir among the hospital orthopedists, with them all coming down to examine her and observe the fracture reduction procedure. They had all learned about this type of break, but had never seen one like this in clinical practice.

They kept saying it was so "unique" and normally they would recommend surgery, but the part of the uniqueness of this awful break was it appeared the fracture could actually be reduced, and we should try that first.

It went great - could not have been any better. The docs were beaming. She may not need surgery, and obviously today we have to talk to specialists.

They sedated her with Ketamine. When they told me that was the plan, I was relieved, because I have adult friends who have received it for painful degenerative diseases, and the thing about it is it's apparently pretty safe. "That's why we are going to use it, plus that way she can breathe on her own" doc said.

She went to school today. Normal as can be except with a humongous cast on her arm.

This afternoon she said … "That medicine they gave me in the IV was creepy. I was in a different world. When I was there I know I remembered EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. But then when I woke up I didn't remember any of it, but I was in a different world and when I woke up it was the regular world."

The whole thing took about 15-30 minutes from when they gave her the ketamine until she was waking back up. The first coherent thing she said besides "woah" and few times and waving at me a few times … was "It's still June 14th right?"

I've witnessed a few other procedures on my other kids, none of them went so smoothly and easily as this did. There's no way they could have set that bone without knocking her out the pain would have been excruciating it broke clear through her growth plate and the oddest angle they had ever seen.

I can't believe how quickly she recovered as if nothing happened, except the cast.

Yeah I knew that and I know people who have but I never did.

I didn't expect him to say that but it immediately made perfect sense that they'd use it to set a broken bone.

I think helped with the fast recovery, too. Her pain level was low and mood pretty high, yet mellow. We walked out of there about an hour after she woke up, but she was ready to go almost right away.

That’s great. The ED did a good job.
Ketamine is generally used more in peds, but has become a favorable option for sedation in adults - less resp depression etc.
I’m happy to hear she’s doing well.
Props to the ped orthopod on the reduction.

They were amazing. It was the pediatric ER at our regular hospital, and not a specific pediatric ortho but the entire ortho team came down for it and there was a mix of pediatric experience. No pediatric ortho surgeons, which seemed to be a concern at first.

They were initially going to refer me to DuPont in Wilmington Delaware for surgery … that's where we will follow up with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon … but they were al so thrilled with the results of the reduction, I'm hoping DuPont will decide no surgery is necessary.

They were a young bunch, super cool, worked together well … they did the whole thing in the ER bed with a portable x-ray machine.

Orthopedists are always cool docs, in my opinion, but these were great.

I was told to prepare to go to DuPont in an ambulance if they couldn't get it reduced enough, but when it was done they were ooing and awing at what looked like a perfect elbow.

Best hospital experience ever. Props to Inspira in South Jersey they get a bad rep sometimes because they have suc tough competition in Philly and Delaware, but they were excellent!

You can tell by her demeanor today she had a pleasantly thought provoking experience, even though she doesn't remember it … if that makes sense.

I got IV ketamine when I broke my wrist a few years ago. I had this whole conversation with the doctor and only remembered a tiny fraction of it.

It is a disassociative like DXM so you will get visions and all make all sorts of connections with the thoughts in your head. But also your brain cannot encode things into long term memory so you forget most of the trip when you become sober again later on. During the trip you are only operating on your short term memory which only lasts like 5-30 seconds so you forget stuff very quickly and that can make the trip be disorienting for lots of people.

Its not impossible to remember some parts of the trip or bits and pieces, but truthfully, you need to concentrate very hard to remember specific things.

If you close your eyes this weird dream world fades in out of the darkness and you go all sorts of crazy places. Very neato.

Re: Ketamine in the hospital story
I’ve tried it cause everyone was at the time back in 2007 but wasn’t really much a fan of it. It flukishly changed my life. I wrote about it on here but it got deleted of course because it’s a drug I guess. I was going through divorce and depression and went rock bottom. There was a guy on glp claiming to be God and had a YouTube channel with a bunch of music videos and I was watching one with no sound on on a 60 inch plasma tv. I mention this cause something about the plasma makes me thing it was involved somehow.

It’s an antidepressant in small doses which I didn’t know at the time. After taking a bump and watching this guy claiming to be God I all of a sudden could see the colour of bright orange slowly come towards me with my eyes closed. As I watched and it got closer it started to go into me and slowly through me and the only way to describe it as a near death experience. As I’m lying on the couch and this is happening I keep saying over and over. Why is this happening? It was love times 1000 and it felt like a caramel/plasma rolling inside of me and through me and lasted what seemed like forever. After it was over I was balling my eyes out and was soaked in sweat still asking wtf just happened but I was the happiest person in the universe. I was picked up by an Angel. I wasn't religious but believed in a higher power. Never went to church.

I went to my brothers wedding in Maui 2 weeks later and the you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I was even walking down a cool path a bird called out my name. I shit you not. Ketamine saved my life. I even bought a shirt with the same colour orange I saw and wore it to the wedding on the beach. I told the lady what happened because she asked me why I picked that shirt. Her mouth dropped to the floor. I was on cloud 9. It’s really hard to describe the feeling but it was the most powerful sensation that just blew me away to the point where I couldn’t get the experience out of my mind. I get goose bumps just typing this.

I asked a medium on glp if he could tell me if he knew what happened to me and he said I had an encounter with Arc Angels. So I did some digging and found a story that resonated with me.

I do infusions weekly for pain and stubborn blood pressure .
1 ml/kg body weight. Mine are hard core. Needed but not extremely pleasurable.
Very safe. Brain drug. Resets the brain n my case.
Magic Mushrooms work too. Hard to reliably source.
Saved my life
Glad it worked for our young people!

Nice! I'm happy it's helping you!

A friend of mine gets infusions for CRPS, which is a very debilitating, painful disease.

I was very relieved that they were using it, because I knew it was relatively safe compared to other sedatives.

I've never had any kind of medical sedation and the handful of times it's been used on my kids I freak out a little.

Wow. That's amazing.

Kiddo is only 9, so it's probably good that she doesn't remember the "different world" she's sure she visited … but also good she is a lot happier and more content than anyone would expect, considering what she went through and the level of pain she's still feeling.

It seems like a good application for the drug.

She was out .. but not out out.

She moved her head and feet a little.

It wouldn't do for surgery, I presume.

I’ve heard of that, lean I believe, cough syrup with codeine I thought. I looked up dxm and sounds like just the cough syrup part, with no codeine. Sounds awful.

lol I love you guys.

DXM is short for the drug dextromethorphan hydrobromide.

This drug is commonly found in Robotussin brand cough syrup and it is a disassociative drug when consumed in large quantities. But be very careful to read the label and make sure dextromethorphan hydrobromide is the only active ingredient in the syrup. If there is acetaminophen in it and you drink the whole bottle you will get sick and die, and some brands of Robotussin have other drugs in them so just make sure you know what you are doing before you take anything.

The easiest form of DXM to take is from Robotussin cough gels as you do not have to drink a massive amount of syrup which will make you puke. Even robogels may make you puke sometimes. Its not a drug for everyone, but if you are a fan of the experience it is so much more interesting and engaging mentally then drinking a mickey or a six pack.

Its also much more safer and better for you then alcohol and doesn't poison your body. Just make sure dextromethorphan hydrobromide is the only active medical ingredient again. Ingredients like guaifenesin and pseudoendephrine will probably make you puke and have a more sickly trip, but acetaminophen will kill you by shutting down your liver so dont even try to take a whole bottle with acetaminophen cause it will kill you dead no joke.

That "lean" shit is made from codeine cough syrup and mixed with soft drinks and its stupid cause it just gives you a codeine opiate high, it does not make you trip and travel to other dimensions like dextromethorphan.

Ketamine was used extensively both in the field and in the hospitals during the Vietnam conflict. The military decided to replace ketamine with morphine. Why? Perhaps because it isn't as addictive. Some people will form a great attachment to it, but the withdrawls are minimal compared to opiates. Perhaps they WANTED those soldiers to come back weakened. Hmmmm...makes you ponder does it not.

Many people find K quite desirable, but it doesn't form the physical dependency that the opiates do. It's safer and the experience can open your mind, or so I'm told.
