Re: Early Spring Gardens - Watching a Garden Grow
well i decided to pull those weeds from the one planter box and sow some heirloom beans i saved and dried from last year:

 Quoting: OpenHeartMonk

I'm on the phone at night. I'll have to watch the vid on the computer during the day.

The best beans I ever had were heirloom Cherokee Trail of Tears. The are good fresh or dried, have light purple flowers, are very prolific and the pods are purple but turn green when you cook them.

I don't garden anymore or I would mail you some seeds.
 Quoting: Half Past Midnight

oohhh.. Cherokee Trail sounds adventuristic (sp, if that's a word?!)

that's interesting that the purple pods turn green when cooked. i try to eat raw, but to be honest, i kinda like my veggies steamed!

It’s been super hot here the past few days (30C) and it’s going to be 42C for the next week.

Watering my garden daily now, it takes 3 hours :P

But! Those heirloom bean seeds are already sprouting!!

Working tomorrow but will try to get you a video update in the next few days.

I used to soak the bean seeds in warm water and drain (the then cold water) and put more warm water in the container.

Yeah they sprout quick under the ideal conditions.

Re: Early Spring Gardens - Watching a Garden Grow
organic "non toxic" solutions for pests and disease

sulfer powder for mites and other things

you can make a sulfur spray, but Ive had a very hard time getting a sulfur that dissolves well. I found a 5 or 10 pound bulk bag of sulfur powder on amazon.
I put in a old pop bottle with a tiny hole in the cap and a piece of panty hose secured over the hole with rubber bands or hot glue or twist ties
put some stainless steel balls or steel shot in bottle to help pulverize the sulfur while shaking and applying. I guess theres some plants that arent as tolerant to topical sulfur though. Just dust this powder over your plants every few weeks or so depending on rain and whatnot

you can also you potassium bicarbonate in a water spray for things like powdery mildew. It wont eliminate it, but it can slow it down and help prevent it from spreading as fast.

Ive even used the dish soap and potassium together and that seems to work well too.

and for snails and slugs, Ive found a product called corys snail killer. It uses iron salt to kill them. supposed to be safe for pets and humans and birds. I have heard it may slow worm feeding down though. so use sparingly during outbreaks

That's excellent.
Arugula is known to be fast and I noticed just an hour ago that mine had germinated in 2 days, the soil is very hot and I have been watering well. I have other greens waiting to come up in a raised bed I just made a week ago. Oak boards that are twelve feet long connected with normal 2x6s. The oak was just 5 bucks a board.

As soon as my peas are done I will use the trellis for some heirloom pole beans, Hidatsa Shield Figure, its a dry bean for soups. Got it from the Seeds Savers Exchange at a local hippy store.

happy to hear you've having good success with your gardens too, this heat is a blessing.. IF you can keep things watered!

i've been watering every evening the past few days and the plants seem to love it.

you scored 12' 2x6 oak planks for 5$ per board?
that's incredible, nice find there!

I love natural remedies.

I had flea beetles on my potato leaves. I made compost tea, put it in a watering can & watered the plants with it. I did that I think 2 days in a row & never had the beetles the rest of the season.

There is a clay you can buy where you mix it with water & spray it on plants to prevent bugs from eating the leaves & fruits. I tried it once & the apples were all grey from the clay, and I think it would have worked except I already had plum curculios eating the apples.

This site sells organic gardening products but they also show a lot of pictures of different pests & different plant diseases to help you discover what problems may be lurking in your garden.

Broccoli looks great!
That looks like the cabbage worm moth. If you look on.under the leaves of the plants, you might see the green worms.
I think BT is an organic killer for them but a spray of soap water might work - never tried it.

Wow, everything looks good. The cherries are big & so red. The bean, the broc & cauliflower, And the herbs, dang, I wish we were neighbors.

I think I saw some irises that are done blooming. I think if you cut the dead flower off they send energy to the roots for blooming next year, rather than sending energy to make seeds.

Re: Early Spring Gardens - Watching a Garden Grow
Thanks for the video OHM. I always enjoy seeing other people's gardens.

I'm gathering seed from my onions this year too, I overwintered some Italian cipolliani and they are flowering now.

I am in southern Ohio where I get to plant broccoli very early, I harvested them on June 4th, got 13 pints from 16 plants. They are producing lots of side shoots now. And it's about time to start the seeds for the fall broccoli.

About the garlic growing in pure peat, it may be too acidic.

Loved your roadside clover bed.
 Quoting: Doctor Congo

13 pints of broccoli that’s great!
Did you freeze them?
I can’t eat mine fast enough right now.
Side shoots.. how do those work, just keep the plant in the ground after harvesting the crown?
Also wondering about broccoli seeds, should I just let one of the crowns go to full maturity for that?
Almost wondering if I can pull off a second round of the broccoli this year.
It’s great to grow since it’s pretty easy, yet so expensive at the grocery store to buy.
 Quoting: OpenHeartMonk

Yep, I froze them. Quick blanch in boiling water than a dunk into ice water. I let them sit a few minutes and then put them in pint freezer bags, then into freezer. A pint bag is two servings. Ginger granny and I can split a bag.

After the big head is harvested you start getting side shoots at the higher leaf joints. We picked 6 more pints of the little shoots a few days ago. Then I pulled up the plants and prepared the bed for the next crop.

This morning I planted another cherry tomato that was badly pot bound into the cleared bed, and a special plant that was pot bound too.

ha!

wish i could tell you, i no longer remember.

bought these bean seeds from the organics supplier about ten years ago, and i've just kept creating my own seeds since then.. the original box is long gone (i just took a look at my seed packets collection, it's not there anymore)

sorry, i just don't know!

it's a green bean, that turns purple if the pod over-matures.
the seeds start out green, but turn black when dried (as you saw in the first video where i plant them)

You guys know what I think is the best thing for plants? Feeding them with dead plants.

I used to trim the trees and bushes and put it all in the garden around the plants.

It starts as a mulch and then it breaks down to form soil like in a forest.

I think it makes the plants stronger to help them fight off pests/disease and the fruits/veggies are bigger, tastier and I'm sure more nutritious.

Grass clippings and fallen leaves are just the start.
