But for a year she’ll be receiving $500 per month in no-strings-attached payments as part of an experimental universal basic income program in upstate New York. Places from Compton, California, to Richmond, Virginia, are trying out guaranteed income programs, which gained more attention after the pandemic idled millions of workers. Steele, a special education school aide, is getting her payments through a program in Ulster County, which covers parts of the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River Valley. During the pilot program, funded by private donations, 100 county residents making less than $46,900 annually will get $500 a month for a year. The income threshold was based on 80% of the county’s average median income, meaning it includes both the poor and a slice of the middle class — people who face financial stress but might not ordinarily qualify for government aid based on income. For researchers, the pilot could give them a fuller picture of what happens when a range of people are sent payments that guarantee a basic living. For Steele, 57, it’s a welcome financial boost that helped her pay for car insurance and groceries. “It lessens my bills,” said Steele, who lives in the village of Ellenville with her retired husband. “People think because you’ve been working so many years, that you make this tremendous amount of money. But no, actually.” Awesome. I'll take it. |

I see she is employed. will she be smart and save it all? doubt it - she will not be farther ahead in a year, yet she is okay now. People like this woman are supposed to seem like nice regular normal people to us, who deserve a boost. the bigger picture is ignored. (OP) User ID: 57553864 United States 06/20/2021 02:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP crying when the peasants get a tiny minuscule bailout for situations resulting from no fault their own. OP probably doesnt even wince when corrupt bankers and corporations get BILLIONS in bailout, even when these bankers and corporations caused the epic economic collapses in the first place. Reward the corrupt, and snub the very people who do good and actually pay the damn taxes that the money comes from. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80509055 The ignorance level of the OP is epic. Well do something about it hero! Start up your own occupy movement, that ought to make things right!... Businesses will adjust their profit ratio because they will know you now have the extra cash flow. They'll all conspire, without meeting to conspire, To ALL raise prices at once. Same thing happened to college. Colleges knows govt will pay the college loan so they raised the costs a couple 1000% from the 1960's. Last Edited by tkwasny on 06/20/2021 02:57 PM |

They get paid well for the 180 days school is in session. Many make $60K so if they worked a full year they'd be making $120K. Doesn't sound too bad to me. |

Quoting: GA Girl What's that? Regurgitate cultural Marxist talking points, promote BLM/Pride and essentially indoctrinate their little "humans" to be slave drones? (Well if they must? I got fields layin fallow) This is good, considering how badly us peasants have been SCREWED and ROBBED for generations by the corrupt system of thieves. The monthly payment we actually deserve is closer to $30,000 a month and for life. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80509055 This is part of why. While your contention may be "right" in a "right" world, it is a disaster in our world and people neither remember nor look it through and ahead lies calamity for who it can take. I am not in a good position and I don't want to make it worse down the line But, I am avoiding today because its 100 and i do not need a heart attack from what is going to happen next month and through fall. "I feels sorry for 'em till they talk? Then I'm off the hook and walk!" Monks are home. We are out of money to help anybody with? May God bless and keep us. Amhealer at priest com You gotta remember that its God, God, God. God within, God all around, God as the helper and friend. |
