But fill in the blank something-something studies, theater arts, etc. Not so much. Regardless, there seems to be a sense of entitlement that if a person got a college degree---no matter how marketable---that they should get out and make at least $80k/year. Problems is, now living minimum wage is getting to $15/hr. So a "career" like serving up fast food, which used to be a bridge job for people in HS or college to get to the next stage in their earning power, is supposed to support a family of 4. WTF. When your poison Big Mac, fries, and limestone flavored "shake" costs $16, don't wonder why. |

You don't start out making this kind of money in teaching. Most make around 35K Right, so if they actually worked a full year, they'd be starting at $70K/yr. Sounds pretty fucking good to me. They work 9 to 10 months retard. Plus a lot of them work in summer school to make ends meet. It's not some glamorous profession. No they don't. The standard US school year is 180 days. It's spread over 9 months with a metric shit ton of days off throughout it. No other profession gets that kind of time off. Per their OWN UNION the average teacher works about 1200 hours a year INCLUDING all the hours they lie about “grading papers at home”. I work in corporate America and we really work twice that many hours PLUS travel. But I don’t whine….I chose it. Besides, they should be ashamed of what they teach. Highest paid teachers in the world but we have the dumbest graduates in the developed world. But they sure teach our children all types of lies. |

But for a year she’ll be receiving $500 per month in no-strings-attached payments as part of an experimental universal basic income program in upstate New York. Places from Compton, California, to Richmond, Virginia, are trying out guaranteed income programs, which gained more attention after the pandemic idled millions of workers. Steele, a special education school aide, is getting her payments through a program in Ulster County, which covers parts of the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River Valley. During the pilot program, funded by private donations, 100 county residents making less than $46,900 annually will get $500 a month for a year. The income threshold was based on 80% of the county’s average median income, meaning it includes both the poor and a slice of the middle class — people who face financial stress but might not ordinarily qualify for government aid based on income. For researchers, the pilot could give them a fuller picture of what happens when a range of people are sent payments that guarantee a basic living. For Steele, 57, it’s a welcome financial boost that helped her pay for car insurance and groceries. “It lessens my bills,” said Steele, who lives in the village of Ellenville with her retired husband. “People think because you’ve been working so many years, that you make this tremendous amount of money. Anonymous Coward User ID: 80004693 United States 06/20/2021 08:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | $500 for some folk in Upstate New York, in year long "trials," isn't Universal, nor is it a Basic Income. Universal Basic Income isn't "Here Folks" until I get it, you get it, and every other single American Citizen gets it. Equally. "Universal." Until everyone, from the poorest people, on up to Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. Where Everyone gets the Exact Same Amount of just barely enough money to find a place to sleep warm at night and enough to eat so as not to starve. No less, no more. However... Beyond that, let capitalism and free trade and commerce provide for anything beyond basic sustenance, with ZERO other handouts or exceptions. No food stamps, No free phones, nothing else. Want more than the UBI will provide? Earn it through wages or investment. If you don't use the UBI to actually buy food and shelter, that is your business. Maybe, by next month's UBI, you will have learned the lesson and be more like the fabled ant, and not like the unwise grasshopper. So, we have not yet had a UBI that is really "Universal" or a "Basic Income." Furthermore: Pay for UBI by taxing INTERNATIONAL CORPORATIONS for the chance to do business within the USA with a VAT tax. Andrew Yang was right about UBI and a VAT to pay for it. Tie the UBI amount to, and make it adjustable to, any inflation, and make it NO STRINGS ATTACHED. Want to hold UBI over citizen's head and make them do whatever? Want to use UBI to make people get vaxxed, for example? Fuck off. The UBI law must include "No Strings Attached" except citizenship. Any strings attached, or eroding UBI's value with inflation must be prevented. UBI must always be enough to provide for only basic food and shelter. Let people be free. Yet, let them work and earn in order to enrich their lives beyond mere existence. Until such a time as we realize true UBI, there will always be wage slavery and universal emancipation hasn't really happened, this includes people of all races. The time for true UBI is now. |
