Anton LaVey was a character. He was right in the fact that modern witches and wiccans don't want to be associated with Satanism. Who does? Where I disagree is that we all feel the need to denigrate each other over our beliefs. He was referring to modern wicca and reconstructionist witches looking down their noses at Satanism. I see it as a valid path for some people if that is what they choose. Personally I don't know why you would want to go down such a dark path, but that's just me. Almost all self proclaimed satanists don't believe in a literal satan. LaVey didn't either. Matter of fact, he told the FBI that satanism was 'a completely made up thing" Witchcraft uses the same forces that occult does. Creating chaos to bring order / balance. And only non-theistic Satanists don't believe in a literal Satan and not only do some of them blatantly lie but they are used as a facade for the public face of the Satanic church. Anton LaVey was theistic , he even refers to Satan with reverence and holding in esteem in various parts of the Satanic Rituals. Of course he is going to tell the FBI a half truth when being investigated for murder , yet Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) is a totally REAL thing that the FBI investigates. His clever wording of report is only a play on etymology that the word 'Satan' and 'Satanism' is relatively new but is just another rebrand and relabel of the same deceptions and occult which have existed since ancient Sumeria and even then were plagiarizing and twisting God's Word. https://imgur.com/7qhf9Pn [ link to imgur.com (secure)] Witchcraft uses the law of return to affect changes in one's perception and thereby alter their reality. Christianity, Theistic and Non Theistic Satanism operate on the same principle. The difference is Satanism uses different tools and images whereas you as a Christian uses prayer to affect change. In witchcraft, we use the pentagram (a christian symbol from long ago), the cauldron and the athame. These are just tools to help focus the mind. The underlying principle is the same in all cases. We believe that darkness and light coexist and need each other to be in balance. We use shadowork to bring the darkness in ourselves into alignment. It has nothing to do with Satan. When you speak of Ancient rituals, you are referring to high or ceremonial magic which is something most modern witches, myself included do not do. As for LaVey, He was a showman above all else. Hell he was a carnival barker for goodness sake. Most of what he did, like Crowely, was soley to piss off Christians. A fact that he admitted to. Levay did not believe in a literal Satan. To them, Satan was a representation of Rebellion against what he saw as excess in the Christian Church. And yes Lavey hated the new age movement. He saw them as wannabes. Ironically, most witches today view it the same way.
